WALTER WERNER, OF` HOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE NOBLE c WOOD MACHINE C0., O1? HOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
- BEATING ENGINE.
My present invention relates to beating paper and board.
pulping stock for paper, particularly tothe bed plates and beater bars used therein.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of bed plate and beater har particularly adapted for use in engmes designed to work over old papers, books, and
other materials vwhich are used as raw stock from which to make the cheaper kinds of Another object of this invention 1s to pro.
duce an improved bed plate adapted for usel in conjunction with suction or other drawoff means whereby that portion of the raw stock which has been sufficiently pulped and fined may be withdrawn from the beater, escaping from the general mass through holes formed in the bed plate.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bed plate and beater bar the working surfaces or edges whereof are greater 1n effective length, for a given length of roll, than any of the present used types.
The manner in which I have attained my objects is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a vertical cross section through the beater roll, bed plate and back fall.
Fig. 2 isa section along the line on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of my improved bed plate.
The same reference numbers refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 2 represents a lp ortion of the tub, 3 the midfeather, and 4 the beater roll which is preferably so mounted that its position with relation to the bed plate 5 may be adjusted and the width of the opening between the bed late 5, and the bars 6 of the beater roll 4, e regulated.
The space-between the bed plate and.the beater bars as they pass it being of zig zag shape, the effective length of the working edges .of the bars is longer than is possible when the edges thereof are substantially straight, as in the usual beaters, and the defibreing effect thereof is correspondingly greater 'the tearing or breaking action thereof on the coarser portions of the stock being worked, or raw stock which has been reJ cently introduced into the tub, being much Application filed February 15, 1927. Serial No. 168,421.
more forcible and rapid than in a usual engine.
As shown in the drawings, my improved bed plate 5 is extended rearwardly and upwardly and is let into the lower part of the face of the back fall 8, and is hollowed out underneath to form a chamber intov which a draw off or suction pipe 9 may be connected.
The mean face of my improved hed plate 5 is curvcd on a radius somewhat greater than the radius of the beater roll 4, and is formed into, or has formed thereon, a series of spaced ridges 7 the size and shape whereof at the point directly beneath the center of the beater roll 4 is substantially that of thev notches which make a serrated edge on the beater bars 6, these ridges are curved down at their forward ends so as to offer but slight obstruction to the entrance of raw stock into the space between the roll and the bed plate, and the rear portions thereof are gradually reduced in height until they finally disappear near the upper edge of the part 5. Rows of holes 10, are provided through which water and properly reduced stock may be drawn into, and removed from the hollow in the bed plate by or through the draw off 9. Preferably there is a row of holes located along the line of the top of each ridge and other rows intermediate the rows opening through the top of the ridges.
While I have shown, and now prefer to make the bed plate 5 as a single casting, I may build it up of two or more pieces if the size of the part is such as to make such course desirable.
I claim:
1. The combination in a beating engine of a tub with a back fall therein, an adjustably mounted beater roll the bars whereof have serrated working edges; a hollow bed plate curving rearwardly and upwardly and having a series of ridges formed on the working face thereof said ridges lying at substantially right angles to the axis of said heater roll, said working face perforated; and a draw off connecting with the hollow in said bed plate..
2. The combination iu a beating engine of a tub with a back fall therein, a beater roll the bars whereof have serrated working edges; a hollow bed-plate the working face whereof is perforated and has a series of ries ,of'parallel transverse ridges.
5. In a beating engine, a tub, a beater roll journaled therein including bars having notched working edges, a back fall located at one side of said roll, and a hollow bed plate lying beneath the roll and extended upwardly to lie flush with said back fall, said plate lhaving a series of spaced ridges arranged substantially in a. line with the notches of said bars, and at right angles to the axis of said beater roll.
G ln a beating engine, a beater roll including bars having notched working edges, a hollow bed plate having a perforated surface curved on a radius somewhat greater than the radius of said roller, and a series of serrated ridges formed on said plate and having their high points substantially in a line with the low points of said bars.
7. In a beating engine, a hollow bed plate having a curved perforated surface, spaced ridges formed on said surface, a beater roll, said plate being curved on a radius somewhat greater than the radius of said roll, and
Cil
said roll including bars having notched working edges, with said notches arranged to pass the ridges on said plate.
1n testimony whereof l have affixed my signature.
WALTER WERNER.
