CASPER E. YOUNGGHILD AND 'BEBIR-AM 'r. Melanin, or rear EDWARDS, WISCONSIN. I
PULP-BEATER ROLL.
Application filed March 3, 1923. Serial No. 622,506.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CASPER E. Yourse- CHILD and BERTRAIM T. McBAIN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Port Edwards in the county of'VVood and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a PulpeBeater Roll; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to paper making machines and more particularly to an improved type of pulp beater roll provided with built-up fillers to greatly increase the beater surface, said roll adapted for use in a beating engine or Hollander type of beat-er to prepare stock or pulp so that the'pulp fibres will more closely mat when being formed into paper in a paper making machine. 7
It is an object of this invention to provide a beater roll with additional filler bars secured between valternate sets of fly bars said filler bars and fly bars being built-up on their tread surfaces by welding material thereon. e
It is also an object of the invention to provide a beater roll with additional built-up fillings adapted to increase the beating surface of the roll about double'without reducing the number of circulations of the pulp or stock in the beater tank, nor the thickness Or consistency'of said pulp or stock.
Another object of the invention is to re claim old beater rolls by securing auxiliary filler bars between alternate pairs of the roll fly bars, and then using the old fly bars as a base upon which material is welded to provide tread'flanges which are ground to afford a tread surface for the roll.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a beater roll wherein the fly bars have secured thereto filler bars which together with said fly bars are built-up by welding material thereto which when worn down by usage can be rewelded or built-up, making the life of the beater roll substantially perpetual.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide a method for increasing the beating surface of an old beater roll by securing additional filler bars between alternate pairs of the beater roll fly bars and the beating capacity substantially doubled by securing additional fillings in place between the old fly bars and then building up the fly bars and thefillings by welding material thereto, after which. the built-up beater roll is ground to afford a true circular beater surface in which every bar does its share of the work when coacting with the machine a bed plate which is planed to the exactarc of the built-up roll.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the dis closures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a beater roll embodying the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary developed portion of the peripheral face of the beater roll. a
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section taken on line 33 of Figure 2. a
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of beater roll.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the beater fillings.
Figure 6 is an end view thereof. a
Figure 7 is a transverse section thereof taken on line 77 of Figure 5.
As shown on the drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates a heater roll drum provided with a supporting shaft 2. The periphery of the drum 1 is made up of a plurality of spaced wooden staves or foreign matter such as pieces of iron or wrenches find their way into the beater. The additional filler bars, when welded in place, increase the beating surface over one hundred per cent, and also tend to increase the life of the roll one hundred per cent at the same time. By welding the various bars together, as described, it is impossible for them to work out of place, even though the retaining rings usually secured on the ends of the beater roll should come off or be omitted.
We are aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
we claim as our invention:
1. A beater roll comprising a drum, fly bars rigidly secured radially on the periphcry thereof, filler bars rigidly secured between alternate pairs of said fly bars, and
material built-up on the tread surfaces of said fly bars and of said filler bars to afford a tread for the beater roll.
2. A beater roll comprising a drum, metal fly bars rigidly secured thereto and projecting radially therefrom, filler bars rigidly secured in place between alternate pairs of said fly bars, and tread flanges on said fly bars and on said filler bars provided by welding material thereto.
3. The combination with a beater roll and the fly bars thereof, of) filler bars welded in place between alternate pairs of said fly bars, and material welded to said fly bars and to said filler bars to afford tread flanges which may be'built-up when worn.
4c. The combination with an old beater roll and the fly bars thereof, of filler members rigidly secured to said fly bars, and tread flanges formed on said filler members by welding material thereto.
5. A beater engine beater roll comprising a drum, a shaft for supporting the same,
radially directed metal fly bars rigidly secured longitudinally of said drum, staggered spacer bars rigidly secured between alter nate pairs of said fly bars, filler bars rigidly secured between the remaining alternate pairs of said fly bars, and tread flanges formed on said fly bars, said spacer bars and said filler bars by welding material thereon.
6. The method of increasing the beating surface of a beater roll, consisting of rigidly securing additional filler members between the fly bars of a beater roll and then welding material to said fly bars and to said filler members to form tread flanges.
7. The method of increasing the beating surface of a beater roll, said method consisting of welding filler bars and spacer bars respectively between alternate pairs of the beater roll fly bars, and then building up the fly bars, the. filler bars and the spacer bars by welding material to the tread surfaces thereof, after which the built-up beater roll is finished by grinding the built-up portions to afford a true circular beater surface.
8. A beater roll comprising a drum, fly bars rigidly secured thereto and projecting radially therefrom, filler in place between alternate pairs of said fly bars with the tread surfaces of said filler bars flush with the tread surfaces of the fly bars, and tread flanges secured to the tread faces of said fly bars and said filler bars.
9. The combination with a beater roll and the fly bars thereof, of filler members rigidly secured between said fly bars, and tread members rigidly secured on the tread faces of said fly bars and of said filler members.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
