4 Claims.

This present invention relates to certain'new and useful improvements in a suction box top for a paper making machine.

The primary object of the invention resides in 5 the provision of a suction box top for a paper making machine which is of generally improved and simplified construct-ion and increased efliciency.

The invention has for another object the pro vision of a suction box top for a paper making machine of the character stated which is constructed in diagonally transverse sections which may be readily replaced independently of one another, when required.

The invention has for a further object the provision of a suction box top for a paper making machine of the character stated which is ccnstructed of a series of slightly graduated transverse sections which may be individually replaced when worn or otherwise damaged, thus obviating the necessity of replacing the complete suction box top.

The invention has for a still further object the provision of a suction box top for a paper making machine of the character stated in which the top is constructed in transverse sections in the form of end wood blocks or hard wood end grain blocks with the suction openings extended vertically therethrough with the grain and arranged in diagonal rows.

The invention has for a still further object the provision of a suction box top for a paper making machine of the character stated in which the wear on the sectional suction box top is reduced to the minimum owing to the suction box top being constructed in transverse sections with the grain running vertically of the sections constructed from hard wood and the suction openings arranged in diagonal rows through the sections and the upper ends of the suction openings countersunk.

The invention has for a still further object the provision of a suction box top for a paper making machine of the character stated which may be manufactured at small cost and supplied at a reasonable price with good profit with each section of the block or top replaceable individually without difficulty and at small expenditure of time and labor.

To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawing forming a part of this disclosure, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be noted the suction box top is constructed in a plurality of diagonally transverse block sections A, B, C, etc., which have their ends 6 oppositely inclined while their longitudinal side faces 7 are parallel and vertical. The bottom 8 of each block section is fiat and also the top 9 or upper face. The block sections A, B, C, etc., are all I constructed from hard wood with the grain running substantially vertically though preferably at a slight angle to the vertical and inclined the length of the block to extend in the direction of travel of the screen. Said block sections A, B,

C, etc., gradually taper in width from one end of the suction box 12 to the other thereof or transversely of the paper making machine so that each block section A, B, C, etc., is of a slightly different size and is suitably marked to permit ready placing of the different block sections in proper position. Through each of the block sections A, B, C, etc., vertical suction openings 10 are provided in diagonal rows with the upper ends 11 of the suction openings 10 countersunk. The various block sections A, B, C, etc., are secured in position on the suction box 12 by appropriate seeming and retaining means 13 and as the block sections A, B, C, etc., are constructed of hard wood with the grain running vertically thereof and the top or upper faces of the block sections A, B, C, etc., all smooth and flush with the upper ends 11 of the suction openings 10 countersunk, the pulp carrying belt or screen 14 operates over the suction box top efficiently with the minimum damage to the belt or screen 14 nection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a suction box top for a paper making machine is provided that will fulfill all the necessary requirements of such a device but as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of the invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitative or restrictive sense.

' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A suction box top for a paper making machine constructed from a plurality of diagonally transverse blocks having their ends inclined and gradually tapered and each provided with diagonal rows of vertical suction openings with'their. upper endscountersunk.

2. A suction box top for a paper making machine composed of a plurality of end wood blocks extending diagonally across the suction box and of graduated size, tapering from one end of the box to the other; said end wood blocks having diagonally arranged vertical suction openings therethrough with countersunk upper ends; said end wood blocks being individually replaceable.

3. A suction box top for a paper making machine composed of a plurality of tapering transversely directed blocks having the grain running at a slight angle to the vertical and inclined the length of the block to extend in the direction of travel of the screen.

4. A suction box top for a paper making machine composed of a plurality of diagonally transverse blocks having their ends inclined downwardly and outwardly and of graduated size gradually tapering longitudinally of the suction box; diagonal rows of vertical suction openings with countersruik upper ends in said blocks; in-

wardly inclined side walls on opposite sides of said suction box gradually converging through. out their length and adapted to hold therein said suction blocks of graduated size from one end of the suction, box to the other and end blocks removablymounted on opposite ends of said suction box having their inner ends tapered to conform with the sides of said diagonally transverse blocks and adapted to retain said blocks longitudinally on said suction box.
