ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
Application filed ()ctober 10, 1927. Serial No. 225,285. g,
to providea wrenches this. character which may be ei'liciently employed as an end wrench or socket wrench, at the will of the operator and without the necessity of making ad-- justments in the wrench construction.
With the foregoing andother objects in view which will appear. as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without Y mov departing from the'spirit of the invention.
Referring .to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevatlonal view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being partly in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional .view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 88 of Figure l.
Figure 1 is a sectional View taken on line 44: of Figure 1; I
Referring tothe drawing in detail, the device includes a pair of pivotally connected members 5 and 6 respectively, the'members being provided with jaws 7 at their outer ends, while the inner ends thereofare formed into handles 8.
The section 5 has an enlarged portion 9 which is cut away providing a clearance for the member 6 that moves with respect thereto. r
' As shown, the members 5and 6 have out out portions defining curved surfaces 10 that are engaged by the enlargement 11 eocentrically formed to provide a cam, to the end that when the enlargement 11 is ed or rotated to move over the curved es 10 the members 5 6 will be away fr m each other er permitted 'to-move towards each other according to the position ofthe enlargement 11.
The enlargement 11 is mounted on the pin 12 on which the lever 13 is mounted, which lever ispivotally mounted on the outer surface of the member 5 as clearly shown by Figure 1.
Teeth 14- are provided along one edge of the head 15 of the lever 18, which teeth are engagedby the pawl 16 that is pivotally supported on the member 5 so that when the lever 18 has been moved'to a certain posi- 7 tion, the pawl will operate to lock the lever 13 against movement.
As clearly shown by Figure 1, the jaws 7 have their outer surfaces curved as at 17 and are engaged by the sleeve 18 which is each other, and when the jaws have been moved to a certain position, the sleeve will act to lock the jaws against movement.
ThlS sleeve18 is moved when the lever 13 is moved, the connection between the sleeve and lever 13 being made through the link 19 that is eccentrically. connected with the head of the lever. It should be obvious that when the jaws 7 are moved into clamping relation with an object to be positioned by the wrench, the lever 13 will act to move the sleeve 18 to lock-the .jawsagainst move ment as described. I j I In order thatthe wrenchmay be used as a socket wrench, a bar 20 ispivotally connected with the member 5 and is provided with a cut away portion 21 into which the member 6 extends, the member 6 contact ing with the-walls of the cutaway portion so that by rotating the member 10 the wrench may be turned when positioned as a socket wrench. I A rectangular head 22 is provided on the bar 20 so that the head may be engaged by an end wrench for rotating the wrench after it has been positioned. 7
From the foregoing it will be seen that when it is desired to position the wrench, the lever 13 is moved so. that the jaws 7 are separated, whereupon the lever is moved in the opposite direction causing the cam 11 to separate the handles of the members 5 and 6, resulting in. the jaws 7 being moved into close engagement with the object under eperatiea \Vith this movement of the lever to close the jaws on the object under treatment, the sleeve 18 moves to lock the jaws in such position and in such a way as to prevent the jaws from'slipping from their work.
I claim:
1. A wrench including pivoted members, jaws at the outer ends of the pivoted mem bers and handles at the inner ends thereof, said jaws having their outer surfaces curved, a cam disposed between the handles for moving the handles away from each other to close the jaws, a lever for operating the cam, a sleeve movable over the curved surfaces of the jaws to lock the aws against movement, and a link connecting the lever cam disposed between the handles and cooperating with the curved surfaces to move the handles away from each other to close the jaws, and a lever for operating the cam.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
