MAGNET.

My invention relates to improvements in magnets, of either electro or permanent type,
wherein a detachable pole, consisting of a suitably shaped probe, operates in con u1 c- 5 tion with an adjustably mountedopposite pole to vary the strength of a magnetic field its poles adjustable relatively to the other pole whereby the strength of the magnet1c field between said poles may be varied, or
adjusted and controlled.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the preferred form of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part'of the present application \vhereinlike charactors of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the specification and drawings, and in which Fig; 1 is an elevation, partly broken, dis-' closing my improved magnet; and
Fig; 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings the numeral '1 is used to designate in general .a U-shaped magnet having north and south poles 2 and 3 respectively, the south pole 3 being provided with a detachable probe 4: of suitable shape whereby said probe may be removed and other probes of variousshapes andsizes, according to the nature and purposes for which they are to be used, may be substitut- I ed therefor.
The end of the north pole 2 is hingedly or otherwise movably mounted whereby itmay be moved toward and away from the opposite pole or probe 4: to vary the strength A further object of the invention is to provide a U-shapedmagnet having one of of the magnetic field between said poles whereby said field may be adjusted and controlled. In the preferred form of the invention the north pole may be hing'edly connected as at 6 so that the said north pole 2 may be moved toward and away from the south pole.
In, operatiom'when it is desired to remove a magnetic foreign particle from an eye-ball,
a suitableprobe, depending upon the nature and location of the foreign magnetic parthen placed as close as possible to the foreign particle to be removed.
By manipulating the movable pole the operator is able to not only control the ,direction and path of the lines of' magnetic force, but toalso direct the greatest amount of magnetic flux in a direction which will dislocate and remove the foreign magnetic particle, such as a piece of steel, from an eyeball. Inthis manner the foreign particle may be placed within the strongest mag netic field and being magnetized by mutual magnetic induction willadd to its mutual V magnetic attraction and thereby assist in re moving itself. 7
It is thus obvious that the path ofthe magnetic flux may be directed by means of the movable pole so as to exert the greatest possible 1nfluence upon the foreign magnetlc'particle of-whlcli the magnet is capable,
thereby bringing the said foreign particle directly within the path of the greatest magnetic flux, mutuallymagnetizing said particle, and thereby assist inits removal.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- V 1. A U-shaped magnet for removing par ticles from the eye-ball having one of the poles thereof hingedly mounted thereonand adjustable relatively to the other pole whereby the strength of the magnetic field of said magnet may be controlled.
