The subjectgof this invention is a fusefor projectiles. Y y
The principal object of this invention 1s to providen a fuse'body which may be cast 1n final form' to accommodate individual elements of the fuse mechanism. These elements are likewise of simple structure arj ranged to facilitate fabrication and assemfbly. The inventionl also includes a novel bore safe detonator carrier having a maximum displacement in moving from unarmed Y' to armed position.
i y2o Y (scribed and claimed, it being understood that With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement andA combination of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafter dechanges in the precise embodiment of the ini, vention herein disclosed may be made within l the'scope of what is claimed without departring from the spirit of the invention.- c.
-A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings yin connectionwith a point detonating fuse.
' in armed position;
' I Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of afuse constructed in accordance with the in-V vention;
lFig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of th I Vdetonator carrier housing showing the detol 0 h nator in unarmed pos1t1on;
A Fig. 3 is a similar view withthe detonator` Fig. 41s a view in side elevation ofFig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5.-'5 of Fig. 2; l Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of the detonator carrier elements. Y
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference: 1
A Thek fuse body 5 consists of a casting formed with a'recess 6 in its rear portion, an
axialv passage y7 enlarged intermediate its length to form an expansion chamber 8 `and also enlargediat its forward extremity in the nose of the body to form a seat 9. A passage 10 parallel to the axial passage 7 establishes `anotherfmeans of communication between the recess V6 and the expansion chamber 8. The elements of the fuse mechanism consist of a firing pin 11, a detonator carrier .1 housing 12 and a booster casing 13. The firing pin 11 is mounted inthe axial passage7 Yand has an enlargedbasev 14 held against the The housing 12 is a cylindricalmember held in place by the booster'casing 13 and mounts a transversely movable slide 1G which Y is in the form of a wing headed bolt.' The slide for convenience of manufacture is made of two pieces, namely, a bolt 17 and a head 18. The bolt- 17 which is provided with an opening 19 for receiving a primer detonator 2O is cylindrical in form and may be ksymof reducing its weight. One end of the boli'- is formed with ears 22 for receiving thevhead 18'which is in the form of a segmental disk having the curvature of the housing 12 and the two pieces may be secured together in any convenient manner as by means of the pin 28. j f j The housing 12 is prepared lto mount' the slide by being providedwith afdiametrical cylindrical bore 24 and a slot 25 of less width y j metrically cut away as at 21 for the purpose than the diameter of the bore andintersecting the bore along lines parallel tothe axis thereof. In this mannerthe Winged head of the slide will be in engagement with the walls of the slot 25 to prevent rotation of thebolt and insure the correct positioning of the primer detonator axially of the fuse when the slide moves to the armed position as shown in Fig. 3 under the iniiuence of centrifugal force. The slide is normallyheld in the un armed position by means of a helical spring 26 confined by the plug 27. i
The disposition of the mass ofthe slide due to the addition of the winged head 18 not only permits the primer detonator to be well removed from the axis of the fuse but insures the functioning of the :slide during flight of l Y1 05 l pin aperture 32 Y of such al character es to permit the employ- '.ment of any of ak varietyo'fwel'l-known locking means for preventing return movement of the slldeonce ltr-1s in -armed pos1t1on.
I claim:
l. A-use including a-l body ormedwitlilarecess in its' rear face vand an axial lpassage enlarged intermediate its'lengthvto forml an expansion chamber, said body further formed with @passage pera-llelto. the a'X-ial passagevv and establishing communication between the recess and the expansion Chamber, a firing pin 1n the axial passage, a detonato'rca'rrled 1n vthe inner end-of the recess and aboosterces-Y ing -in the outer'portion of tlie recess.l
