Be it` known that I, ARTHUR ADELMAN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chesaning, county of Saginaw, and State of Michigan, have invented an AImprovement in Fuses,- of which the following is va specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act ofMarch-3, 1883.
The subject of this invention is a fuse.
The primary object ofathe invention is Vto provide a sensitive strikerv carrying a iixed ring pi'n, which is normally held in un'-V armed position, movable to armed position by a centrifugally released member which may carry a ri-ng element, "and the striker at the same time extended to a position where it will function through statical air pressure to maintain the firing pin in armed position until` impact.
To these and other ends, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement,

A fuse body 10 is formed with a transverse passagelll into which is inserted a cylindrical bolt 12 formed W'itha reduced extension 13 `which is adapted to pass ,through an aperture -14 in the fuse body.
The-extension 13 and the aperture y14 may t. e be s uared-to prevent 'rotation of the bolt.

When the fuse comes in contact 'with any object having an appreciable resistance to impact, such as an aeroplane fabric, the striker and firing pin will be moved rearwardly to primethe primerl and detonate the detonator.
In the modified formV shown in Figures 3 and 4, a fuse casing is formed with a hollowed head having an apertured nose for the reception of the striker which carries the ixe firing pin. .l
A member 39 in the casing carries a primer and is axially bored to receive the free end of the firing pin. The forward face of the member 89 is formed with a circular depression 40, having a wall 41 oblique to the axis of the fuse to constitute a seat for a .locking mechanism which supports the firing pin in unarmed position. The locking mechanism comprises a plurality of segments 42v preferably four in number, arranged symmetrically around the firing pin and held together by split rings 43 disposed in a circumferential groove 44. The limited movement of the striker head prevents the firing pin from being extracted from the locking members. Y
The segments are formed with inclined surfaces 45 to conform to theoblique wall 41 of the seat 40 and to facilitate assembly, the inclined surfaces are provided at either end of the segments. Y
When linear acceleration of the projectile ceases the locking members being no lon er opposed are free to be moved outwardly through centrifugal force. During this movement the locking members are constrained to move axially as well as radiallyof the fuseby reason of the oblique Wall 41 thereby causing the firing pin to move forwardly to armed position, and consequently, extruding the striker head to functioning position.
Onimpact the firing pin is free to be l -moved rearwardly to prime the primer as ythe segments will be held against the wall of the causin through centrifugal force.
-While 1n the foregoing there has-been ili lustrated and described such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Vit is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of the invention s hould only be conclusive when made in thel light of the subjoined claims;
a', fuse. body, said aperture in the body, a firing element disposed in one end of the bolt, said bolt formed with a central notch inclined towards the firing element, means for releasably holding the bolt in unarmed position, a firing pin normally disposed in the notched portion of the bolt and adapted to be cammed forward thereby, a striker head mounted in the nose of the fuse body andI adapted tomove with the firing pin, and aretaining ring for limiting the forward movement of the striker head.

A fuse including .a fuse body, said body formed with a transverse passage and an aperture in communication with `said pas-` sage, a bol-t slidably mounted in the passage and adapted to extend through the aperture in the body', a firing element carried in one end of the bolt, said bolt formed ,with a central notch, means for releasably holding the bolt in unarmed position, a firunarmed position, a firing pin normally dis-C posed in the notched portion of the bolt and adapted to be cammed thereby to armed p osit-ion, and means for holding the firing pin in armed position until impact.
4. A fuse including a fuse body, a bolt slidable transversely of the body, a firing element carried in one end of the bolt, `means for releasing said bolt to armed position during flight, a firing pin normally disposed in the path of the bolt and movable thereby to armed position, and a strikerv head movable in functioning position with the firing pin` for holding said pin'in armed position until impact.
