The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the 5 United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The subject of this invention is a combination fuse. In fuses of the type which have a movable .projecting striker mounted in the nose of the fuse, there is present a constant source of danger of the striker being moved rearwardly to initiate explosion during handling of the projectile and while it is in the bore of the gun.
The objectof the present invention is to provide a striker which may be selectively set-to be held againstrearward movement at all times or immovable only until the proi'jectile attains a predetermined rotational .velocity innflight. The safety device is so arranged that setting of the fuse from delay to' instantaneous action is accomplished by the simple operation of removing a cotter p The functioning of'the instantaneous or delayelements are entirely independent of s I each other so that instantaneous action may occur-without interfering-with or preventing delay action. The nose of the fuse head is elongated and bored to form a casing, in which is slidably mounted a striker consisting of a striker head 12, terminating within the fuse in a flanged portion 13, a rod 14, and a firing pin 15. The striker may be held in its forward position against air pressure during flight by means of a coil spring 16, which surrounds the rod 14 and is confined between the flange 13 and the rear end of the casing.
The fuse head 10 is formed at its rear end with a cavity 17 into which projects a stationary firing pin 18, suitably secured in the head specifically by a threaded shank 19 and held by a pin 20. Within the cavity 17 is mounted a plunger 21, which is free to but is constrained against rotary movement with respect to the head by a pin 22 fixed to the head and projecting into a groove extending the length of the plunger. y, r v

The fuse head 10 is formed with a transverse passage 30 forwardly of the cavity 17 forithe reception of a cylindrical bolt 31, which is bifurcated at oneend to straddle the firing pin 15 and also formed with a fiattened upper surface 32 to ride under the rod 14, whereby the firing pin will beheld against rearward movement towards the primer and the bolt in turn will be held against rotation.
