J. HEALY Amal 9, 1929.
INSERT Filed June 8, 1927 Patented Apr. i 9, 1929i.
JOHN A. HALY, OF LANGDON, MINNESOTA.-
Appleation filed June S,
This invention relates to means for hanging pipes, machinery or other apparatus from ceilings or walls and particularly to an insert, which isV adapted to bei embedded Vin concrete, plaster or the lilre to anchor a supporting member therein.V
1t is my object to provide an insert, adapted to receive and support hangers of differentliinds andgsizes, whereby the selection of the hanger best suited to conditions prevailing in a particular installation is permitted.
lThe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal section through the preferred form of my invention, embedded in concrete and showing a bolt in position for insertion; Fig. 2 is a transverse section .through the device showing a differentform of hanger therein; Fig. 8 is a bottom, plan view of the preferred form of the invention; Fig. 4 is a transverse section through an alternate form of the invention; Fig-5 is a plan view of the preferred lform of nutfor the hanger shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, my. de-
y vice consists of a hollow casting 7, which is adapted to be embedded in a ceiling or wall 8 of concrete, plaster or the like.r The top and sides of the casting 7 are closed and the bottom has an opening 9 into which a bolt 10 or pipe hanger 11 may be extended. Unch-iront, outerside walls on the casting 7 are arranged to positively interlock with the surrounding concrete. Within the casting7 is a lower chamber 12 and an upper chamber 13. In
the bottom of the chamber 13 and communii eating` with the chamber 12 is an opening 14 of key-hole shape, adapted to receive the head 15 of the bolt 10. Along the lateral edges of this opening 15 is apairof vflanges 16, arranged to support the head 15. rllhe opening 9 in thev bottom of the chamber 12 registers with the opening 14 and is also of key-hole shape to receive a nut 17 upon the threaded upper end of the hanger 1-1. This nut 17 is preferably formed, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, in dish-shape with a. tapered bore 18 arranged to receive the threaded upper end of the hanger y e 1t cannot be removed from engagement with INSERT. i
1927. Serial N0. 197,344.
-19,"adapted to facilitate securing the insert upon a concrete form, vas hereinafter described..v
In the alternate form of my device shown in Fig. 4,1 provide a hollow casting 20 in which are formed chambers 21 and 22 for the nut 17 and head 15 respectively. These chami bers are separated by a wall 223 and have openings 24 and 25 respectively, similar to the openings 9 and 14 of the preferred construction, but upon opposite outer sides ofthe casting. 1t will. be noted that the opening 24 is in one flat side 26 of the casting 2O and the opening 25 is in a parallel flat sidev 27. Fairs of ears 28 and 29 are formed respectively in continuation of the sides 26 and 27 for securing the casting 2O upon the concrete form, said ears being similar to the ears 19 of the preferred construction.
In. the construction of a building, before the concrete 8 is poured andafter the forms therefor have been constructed, an insert or aplurality of them are secured upon the forms with the openings 9 closed by the forms.
Small nails may be driven between the pairs of ears 19 to'hold the casting 7 in place. Now when the concrete is poured, it embeds the casting 7, as indicated in Fig. 1, and extends beneath the undercut sizes thereof to securely hold .it in place. When the concrete has set and the forms therefor are removed, theeinsert 7 is retained in the concrete and presents the openings` 9 and 14 in the exposed surface of the ceiling or wall. llien it isdesired to secure machinery, pipes or other fixtures to the insert by means of a standard bolt,'such as the bolt 1() shown in Fig. 1, vsuch bolt-is inserted, as indicated in Fig. 1, in oblique position, so as to pass the head 15 through the enlarged end of the opening 14. When thehead has been inserted above the flanges 16, the bolt may be moved to the vertical position, indicated-in dotted lines, in which position the flanges 16. These supporting flanges 16 are of sufficient length to, permitlimited adjustment or movement of the bolt within the insert. rNew by turning a nut upon the threaded, lower end of the bolt 10, the lixtures may be secured to the ceiling or wall. According to present gpraetiee, -meta'l bands are frequently used to attach machinery and piping to walls or ceilings and the bolt 10may be inserted through p er-'t'orastio.Ils finySllGh apifpe 3() 2)l may ybe suspended'therefrom, instead `Voi, jl`io1ii`tlie bolt To .support this type of hanger, the nut gli'ris thread-V ed uponv the upper endet the member 11'1 and by vreason of the tapered thread, kmay be turned" down'V snugly so aste prevent accidental withdrawal :by subsequent turning of .i the nut in the hanger. Now, bytllting the hanger 11 to one side, the nut 17 maybe insertedfthrough the enlarged end 0i the openy "ing 9 and the hanger moved to vertical position, as shown 'inf'Fig 2. hanger ring 31 having a tapped boss '32 to receive' the lower end ofthel member 11 maybe employed to Vsupport the pipe 3Q, or other object to be supported. V"lhie -:pipe 30,with the ringl 31 thereon, vis then elevated and thelower end lof "the hanger v'11Yis finally turned the desired distance into vthe threaded bore of Vthe in lFig. el', it is necessaryy to decide,be"fore sethe jbolt 1() are required in the particular lo Cil boss 32l whilel rotating` the nut 17 in the insert 7. Theelongated opening Qvpermits adjust- 'Inent of thehanger 11 longitudinally yoi the flanges 9"1 wit-hinthe insert- 7', while the thread onv the lower end otsaidfhanger'permits ver-1.
tical adjustmentv lilith the alternate Jform of' device shown curing the casting QO'in placey upon the'jform,
what size or 4kind hanger isfto used in the particular location, namely, whether oil the typeot thebolt'lll or l.larger hangerl. Thus, w ierethe hanger 11 is to'be nsed,;the surface 26 ot the casting 20 is placedin con* tact with the concrete ier-mand the ears Q8 are secured to the form. Qther'vviSe, it'bolts like cation, thesurfaces 27 of the castingsfQO are placed incontaet with the concrete form and the ears 29 are-secured tothe lorm. Now
vwhen the Concrete is poured, itisA excluded from the lower chamber 21er 22 and allowed Vtojenter the upper one olf said chambers.
` V-VWhen the concrete ornii's removed, either the opening 24 or Athe openingmQ vis accessible for insertion of the :bolts 1Q or hangers 1,1, as above described. e
As w1 leer' be anderswo@ my mrroid ,.'insert obnij'ates .the necessity for inserts of diilerentsrzes with erred construction, shown in Figs. ,1, 2 and v 3, it is unnecessary to decide in advance el:V the installation oi' the insertwhat type' of hanger is to be employed or what type ot fixture or piping is to be anchored by meansof the insert.. lNhile I have described somewhat in detail the bolts 10 andfhangers 11, itY is to be understood that other types of hangers maybe secured inv the insert and I do not wislrto--li1nit my .invention to any particular hanger. Y Y Y Having described my inventionv what lA claim Patent is: f e y 1. Anf insert coinprising` hollowlbody,
