JOHN P. SWAN, or PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL FIRE EXTIN- GUISHER COMPANY, F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application led January 25, 1915. Serial No. 4,144.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN P. SWAN, aciti zen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inserts for Concrete Structures, of which the following is a speciication.
In the construction of variousl concrete structures, such as walls and ceilings, it is a common practice to provide for the suspension of heating pipes, water pipes and the like therefrom by embedding therein, when they are cast, metallic inserts which become permanent parts of the structures and to which the pipe hangers are subsequently attached. The present invention which relates to devices of this character, is intended to provide a sim le and inexpensive insert of such construction that a hanger can readily be attachedto it or detached from it, or adj usted with respect to it in such manner as to secure and maintain the desired'alinement of the pipe carriedv thereby.
The features of construction in which my invention resides are in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which v Figure 1 is a side elevation of my insert, as preferably constructed, showing it embedded in a mass of concrete and carrying a pipe hanger; Y
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the insert, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line m-zv in Fig. 2; and
Fi 4 is a view showing the bottom or expose face of the insert.
The insert shown in the drawing `comprises a hollow body portion 2 having anoblong contour and provided on one side with a iiat i'ace 3 and on its opposite side or'at any other suitable point or points with projecting portions such as ianged webs 4 connected by a cross-web 5, which together with the body portion are adaptedl and intended to be embedded in a concrete structure such as 6 when the latter is cast and to serveas anchors to hold the insert in place in the concrete when it sets, so that the insert becomes a permanent and immovable part of the structure. The flat face 3 is intended to be located flush with the exposed face of the structure, and in order to provide for holding the insert in proper position while the concrete 1s belng cast around hereinafter described it the body portion 2 is preferably provided, adjacent to said face 3, with lateral projections 7 having notches 8 in their outer ends for the reception of nails whereby the insert may be tacked to the mold board which confines the concrete surrounding the insert.
The exposed side of the insert is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 extending inward to the hollow interior of the body portion 2 and having at one end a lateral enlargement 10, the longitudinal portion of said slot being somewhat narrower than the space 11 within the-body portion, so that4 ledges 12 extending along the side edges of the slot 9 are formed within the body portion on opposite sides of said slot. The side walls of the space 11 are preferably flared outwardly somewhat, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the junction of these side walls with thel ledges 12 there is provided on each side of the slot 9 a line of angular notches 13, each located a short -distance back of the adjacent edge of said slot.
As thus constructed, the insert is adapted to be incorporated in a concrete structure with its face 3 exposed at the face of the structure as -already described, whereupon a pipe 14 oi' the like may be suspended therefrom by means of a hanger 15 provided at the upper end of its shank 16 with a head 17 having an angular contour, the shank 16 and head 17 being of such dimensions'that turning said shank into approximate arallelism with the face 3 of the insert the ead 17 may be passed through the enlargement 10 and into the space 11. If the hariger is then turned into upright position it can be moved along the slot 9 to any desired point and suspended by the head 17.
resting on the ledges'12, with opposite corners of the head located within a pair of the notches 13 and there held by the weight of-the ypipe suspended from the hanger.
Assuming that the direction of the slot 9 is transverse to the direction of the pipe 14,it will be seen that the construction above described provides for lateral adjustment of the hanger in accordance with the desired alinement of the pipe, and also that the hanger will be locked in any given position of adjustment by the engagement of the head 17 with the notches 13, which will necessarily prevent movement of the hanger lengthwise of the slot 9. This engagement '-.readily;diseonnected `from the insert at any of the-head :.andfinotches lmay v.also be .sutilized "togprevent .rotational movement of the shank S16 .while the threaded coupling l'1'8is :turned toflen'gthen for shorten said fshank, :or awhile the llower portion of .the
hanger {turned into position to receive the .j rpipe I'which it carries. Changes in lateraly Sposition fof `the hangerare readily made by 1fmerelyliftingfthehanger slightly and vmovi'ngit a'long they slot 9,;and l.the hanger f can be '..timein an :obvious `zmanner, the outwardly landuxpvvardly .aringfcontour of the space I .121 being zuseful :for facilitating the .movemay be "ven :any .shape .and dimensions zsuitable 1 or any given :s1tuat1on,and lthat the details vof construction, `such as .relate to :shape and .location of the anchoring 'wvebs, :the @slot i9 'and yfits enlar ement an ithe hangerfsupporting and rloc ing means #within "the 7body fportlon, may be considerseries o Vably varied kWithout .departing from the invention.
'The combination with a hanger having a shank and an angular head extending transversely thereto, of an insert' comprisin a hollow body portionadapted to be embed ed .in a concrete .structure and having in its exposed Wall a slot including a longitudinal portion of sulicient Width to receive the shank of the hanger and a lateral enlargement located at one end of said longitudinal portion and having suliicient Width to'receive the head of the hanger- When presented edgewise thereto; said body portion being providedon each side of the narrow `portion of the slot with a continuous ledge adapted to support the head of the hanger in yany fosition of adjustment and with a slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th day of January,1915.- l
