Description
W. PLACE & R. CUNNINGHAM.
rouszmre MACHINE FDR BOOTS AND SHOES.
N,17o,765, Patented Dec. 7,1875.
Urrnn STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
WALLACE PLACE AND ROBERT CUNNINGHAM, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN POLISHING-MACHINES F OR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,765, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALLACE PLACE and ROBERT CUNNINGHAM, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Polishing-Machines, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective. view.
Our invention relates to that class of polishing or burnishing machines which are employed in finishing the shanks and soles of boots and shoes; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts. as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of, this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of our invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description:
In the drawing, A A represent the end pieces or uprights of the machine, which are firmly connected by the rods B B and trussbrace B. The uprights are each provided with two arms, 61 cl, a a, in which are mounted the shafts C D. Horizontally journaled near the center of the uprights there is also a main shaft, F, provided with two small fixed pulleys, P P, a large fixed pulley, n, and the driving-pulley z. The shaft C is provided at either end with the large fixed pulleys x so, one of which is connected, by the cross-belt H, to the pulley n, and the other, by the cross-belt I, to the pulley t on the shaft D. Projecting laterally from the body or frame of the machine there is a bracket, M, and disposed in this bracket is a horizontally-journaled counter-shaft, N, connected, by the belt 0, to one of the pulleys P on the shaft F. This counter-shaft is designed to be covered with felt or similar fibrous material, and the felt to be saturated with a proper liquid for striping or moistening the edges of the sole or shank of the shoe preparatory to polishing, and the liquid may contain a coloring-matter or not, as desired. Polishing-wheels L m are arranged on the shaft C, more especially intended for finishing and polishing or burnishing the shank of the shoe. The shaft D also carries two polishing-wheels, 70 70, provided with rabbets or shoulders J J designed for finishing the edge of the sole.
In the use of our improved machine power is applied to the pulley 2 by means of the belt G, causing the belts I H O to run in the direction indicated by the arrows, and the shafts C D N to revolve accordingly. The edge of the sole to be polished is then placed against the fibrous covering of the shaft N, but below the axial line of the shaft, and moved along in contact therewith until properly moistened. The sole is then brought forcibly into contact with the wheel is, being so held and manipulated in the rabbet J as to polish the edge and also a narrow strip of the bottom near the edge at one and the same operation.
In polishing the shank of the shoe it maybe moistened or colored by the same means and polished by the wheels m L.
An additional shaft, N, may be arranged on the side of the machine nearest to the shaft 0, if desired, for more conveniently moistening or coloring the work done on the wheels m L.
Having thus explained our invention, what we claim is-- In a polishing-machine, substantially such as described, the shaft C, provided with the wheels L m, the shaft D, provided with the wheels 70 is, having the rabbets J J, in combination with the counter-shaft N, provided with afibrous covering, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and specified.
WALLACE PLACE.
hi ROBERT X CUNNINGHAM.
