MICHAEL MALLON, OF RAHWAY, NEW JEEsEY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,951, dated January 23, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Machine for Polishing Marble, invented by MICHAEL MALLON, of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey.
My invention consists of a horizontally-swinging polishing stone-holder, with driving-gear and supporting apparatus therefor, adapted to be mounted on the surface of a large stone to be polished, and adjusted along it from one position to another and secured at any point, or to be used 011 a stationary table or platform, all as hereinafter described.

A represents a pair of posts mounted on broad bases B, and supporting the vertical rectangular frame 0 by each end, the said ends being fitted to the postin a groove or slot, so as to rise and fall readily, the grooves and the parts of the frame fitting them being so arranged that the posts and frame cannot be detached in the endwise direction of the frame. The under sides of the base-pieces B are shod with leather sheets D, to hold upon the smooth surfaces by suctionor atmospheric pressure when wet and dropped upon said surface, so that the air will be excluded from between them. This frame supports two vertical crankshafts, E, with their cranks, at the lower ends below the lower side of frame 0, and at the upper ends they are geared with a drivingshaft, F, worked by a crank or other means. A frame, G, is suspended ,on the wrist-pins H of these crank-shafts, in which the polishingstone I is held by set-screws K or other suitable means, to be swung by the cranks over the surfaces of the stone to be polished, the
weight of the polishing-stone, the frame 0, and the driving-gears being utilized to bear the polisher on the stone and increase its efi'ect.
The supports A B are further secured to the, stone to be polishedwhich is represented by.
the dotted lines Lby the extension-clamps M, pivoted to the bed-pieces through slots 0, which allow them to be adjusted to stones ofdifferent widths. The machine may also be adjusted from side to side of the stone to be polished to work over the space between the edges, and held by these clamps, which will be adjusted accordingly.
For working to the ends of a large stone one of the posts may be placed beyond the stone on a platform level with it. For dressing smaller pieces not so long as the frame between the posts, the machine and stone may be placed on a table, the stone being between the posts.

The machine may be used to polish metal and other substances. The sand may be carried upon the top of the stone and fed down through passages Q from time to time to the working surfaces.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the frame, of the extension clamps, substantially as specified.
