IMPROVEMENT IN'KEY-BQOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,668, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIAN H. GATES, of

Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State book open with a single key inserted. Fig. 2

is a View of the key-book closed.

Almost every man has need to carry in his pocket a bunch of keys. They are generally strung upon a ring, and, as tossed about in the pocket, they wear and mar other articles, and unnecessarily wear the pocket.

'My invention is a device for clothing the keys in a kind of book, so as to prevent their wear, one upon another; also, their contact with other articles in the pocket, and their wear upon the pocket itself.

The body of the book a has pockets b for as many keys as desired, and preferably the flap c. Transversely through all the pockets,

near one end, runs the pin, or chain, or strap d, which is removable. This pin runs through the hole in the handle of the keys, each key lying in a pocket. The pin 01, shown in the drawing, is headed, and has upon the other, end, just inside the body of the book, a nut;

but 1 do not restrict myself to a pin, chain, strap, or cord, for all these, and other analogous things, may be used for the same purpose.

I prefer the book to be made of leather; but the material is not essential, as cloth, or felt, or rubber, or other suitable material, may be used.

I prefer that the ends of the flaps or partitions which separate the pockets be connected by an elastic cord, 6, so as to allow them to dilate sufficiently, and yet snugly embrace the keys; but these ends can be left open, or tightly connected in the common method of a pocket-book, if desired. Such a book may have but a single pocket for a single key, or for a number of keys; but I prefer as hereinbefore described.

I am aware that pocket-books have heretofore been made having an elastic gusset running from leaf to leaf, and forming a permanent part of the book, and that memorandumbooks have been made, having arrangements of spring hooks and needles for holding the leaves in the book; and neither of them do I claim as my invention.

My device differs from these, among other things, in that its pin is removable at pleasure to take on and put off keys; that it in no sense serves to hold the leaves in place, out is itself held in place by them; that it is in nowise attached to the covers; and that it is located near one. end of the book, and raised or removed from the hinge or back, so as to be in a convenient place for holding keys; and
