ELIPHALET W. DENNISON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 170,664., dated December 7, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIPHALET W. DEN- NISON, of Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
In the manufacture of paper boxes for jewelers and other uses, several varieties of papers-for instance, varnished, embossed, &c.--are employed as coverings, upon which it is impracticable and sometimes even impossible to print an address or design, for the rea son that in some instances the surface will not take the ink, and in others the surface would be injured or destroyed.
The purpose of my present invention is two fold: first, to enable me to add an address or design to boxes whose exterior surfaces are covered with papers of the above character; and, secondly, to protect to a great extent the address or design from injury or defacement, the nature of my invention, and the means by which I carry it into practice, being hereafter explained.
My improvement consists, briefly, in cutting in the piece of paper which covers or outlies the top or sides of the box an opening of a size and form to correspond with the character of the design which is to be displayed through it, and in pasting to the box, below or under this outer covering, a sheet of suitable paper, upon Whose outer face the design is printed, the latter thus becoming visible through the opening, and being protected to a great extent by the outer sheet of paper.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figure 1, a perspective view, and, in Fig. 2, a section, of a box and its cover containing my improvement.
In these drawings, Fig. 1, A represents the body, and A the cover, of a paper box, adapted to the uses of jewelers and others. 0 represents the sheet of paper with which the cover A is covered, this sheet 0 being composed of paper of a character to receive and retain a design or address of any nature,
which is to be engrossed upon it in suitable ink, in any of the ordinary methods of printing this class of work. In the present instance, this design consists of a business-address, inclosed within a shield, upon a shaded background, and placed centrally of the cover A, but this disposition of the design may be varied to meet requirements. The outer and finishing sheet of paper, in which the cover A, as well as the box, is enveloped, is shown at D as pasted upon and covering from sight the sheet 0, with this exception, that I cut from the center of such sheet D an orifice, E, of a size sufficient to permit the design or address upon the sheet 0 to be visible through it, as shown in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings.
I do not in any sense confine myself to the form, disposition, or number of orifices in the outer sheet D, nor the character of the design or address to be displayed through such orifices, as it will be manifest that these are but variations in the principle of my invention, which circumstances may change.
Among several advantages attaching to my invention, the following are prominent First, 1 am enabled toemploy as a covering to a box a highly finished or ornamental paper, upon which a design or address cannot be printed, and to obtain at the same time the desired design. Second, I am enabled to protect the design or address to a great extent against abrasion or soiling, by packing, transportation, or handling, and permit it to retain in tact, for a long time, its original distinctness and effect.
I claim- A box in which the outer finishing-sheet formed with one or more openings, as described, is combined with an inner sheet, substantially as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
E. W. DENNISON.
