MERCHANDISE CONTAINER. A
Application l'ed August 10, 1925. Serial No. 49,275.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a receptacle in the nature of a folded paper box adapted to serve as a shipping carton for merchandise and also arranged to be used on the store counter as a receptacle for the goods and as a display device for advertising them. It consists of ,certain features and elements of construction in combination as herein shown and described and as indicated by the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a planview of a blank for a box embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective front view of the box arranged for use on the counter.
' Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the rear of the same.
Figure 4 is a perspective rear view showing the box in open position for access to its contents.
Referring first to the blank shown in Figure -14 the area which is to become the front wall, as shown in Figure 2, is the rectangular portion, 1, adjoining which is the top, 2, and bottom, 3. A rear wall, 4, is attached to the bottom, 3, at the folding line, 5, and an enclosing cover flap, 6, extends from the scored line, 7, which divides it from the top wall, 2. It will be understood that the terms top, front and bottom and the like are used merely with reference to the position of the r box as shown in Figure 2. Extending from the frontwall, 1, are outer side walls, 8, 8, with folding terminal portions, 9, 9, which are to be bent around the rear wall, 4, along the scored lines, 10. Tabs, 11, interlocking with cut out portions, 12, in the wall, 4, serve as fastening means for holding vthe box in folded form. These tabs are no part of the present invention beingr more fully described and claimed in my U. S.- Patent Number 1,573,149. i'
Inner side walls, 13, 13, extend as tabs from the bottom wall, 3, and overlap the inner surfaces of the side wall, 8, when in folded position. Between the inner and outerside walls, 8 and 9, quadrant shaped guide members, 14, 14, are slidably engaged, being completely concealed between said side wall members when the top, 2, is in closed position as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
When the box has been lled and the top,
2, is closed the cover flap, 6, is folded down against the back Wall, 4, and its angular tabs, 6, are tucked under the tabs` 9a, the northe parts thus interlocked.
mal sti'ness of the material tending tohold.
When the package reaches the hands of the dealer, the cover flap, 6, is disengaged from the tabs, 9a, and folded back at an angle of about 90 to the top wall, 2, so as to stand upright as shown in Figure 2. It is intended that the front surface of the cover, 46, shall carry advertising matter at 1G and also that the front wall, 1, and top wall, 2, of the box shall likewise be utilized for display purposes.
For holding the part, 6, firmly in upright position, a slide member, 15, is engaged under ears or lugs, 17, extending from the parts, 9, and downwardly extending legs, 15a, pass through the openings, 12, for additional guidance. Lateral projections, 15b, extend' beyond the slotted openings, 12, and thus serve as stops Ato limit the upward sliding movement of the part, 15.
With t-he parts in the position described and shown in Figures 2 and 3, the contents of the box are `fully enclosedand guarded from dust. To obtain access to thev contents the part, 6, is grasped and lifted to the posil tion shown in Figure 4 thus swinging the top wall, 2, upwardlyand bringing the curved parts, 14, outfrom between the side walls, 8 and 13. These quadrants, 14, are provided with stop lugs, 14, which engage apertures, 18, in the rear edges of the box at the upward limit of this movement. If necessary to give proper access to the contents the slide, 15, may be pushed down as shown in Figure 4 so that 'its upper edge comes even with the top of the back wall, 4,n but usually this will not be necessary and after removal of part of the contents the top, 2,'will be swung down to closing position with the cover Hap, 6, standing upright again'as shown in Figure 2.
I claim 1.v In a folded box, including front and AAback walls and a cover hinged to the front wall, side walls for the box, laterally attached flaps on the cover, each extending adjacent one of the sidewalls. each side wall having an integral portion folded at right angles at its rear edge engaging the back wall and having an aperture vsubstantially at said fold of the rear edge; and lugs on theflaps positioned to' enter said apertures to limit the opening movement of the cover.
`2.In the combination defined in claim 1,
'3. In the combination defined in claim 1,
l 5 leg portions entered in slits in the back of the y box and laterally projecting stop lugs on said portions for limiting the upward movement of the slide.
4. .In a folded box, including front and 10'back-W-alls, a top cover hinffed to the front wall and a flap extending vthe cover opposite its hinged edge for foldfrom the. side of folded against the back wall and secured thereto and a slide member havin@r legs eX- tending through openings-in the back wall and an upper portion ada ted to lap over the back of the flap for reinorcing it, together with guide ears on the side wall extensions overlapping the slide adjacent the upper part of the back wall.
