Application filed January 6, 1927 Serial Ito. 159,4281
This invention relates to improvements in locks and particularly those of the cylinder type,one object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means to lock the plug against movement in the event that attempt be made to surreptitiously operate the lock.
A further object is to provide means which shall be operable to lock the plug to the cylinder in a manner to prevent both rotary and longitudinal movement of the plug in the event of surreptitious attempt to force the lock with the use of a screw-driver or other instrument inserted into the key way.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section illustrating my improvements;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view;
Figure 3 is a sectional view illustrating the operation of my improvements, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the plug member of the lock.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, a lock cylinder is indicated at 1 and is provided at one end with an annular recess 2 for the accommodation of the head 3 of the plug 4. The cylinder is also provided with recesses 5 into which the tumblers (not shown) of the lock may engage. The cylinder 1 isprovided (preferably near one end) with a transverse hole or socket (i and the plug 4 has mounted in its wall a radially disposed pin 7 to enter said hole or socket 6 to lock the plug against movement relatively to the cylinder,the hole in the plug in which said pin is mounted being shown at 8, Figure 4. The pin 7 is mounted frictionally tight in the hole 8 in the rib half of the plug.
Normally, the pin 7 will occupy the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, with its outer end flush or approximately flush with the. outer surface of the plug. Should an attempt be made to surreptitiously force the look by forcibly inserting a screw-driver (or other instrument) into the keyway of the plug, the pin 7 will be forced outwardly and caused to enter the hole or socket in the cylinder, as
is evident that when the pin is in the interlocking position shown in Figure 3, the plug cannot be turned and also that it cannot be moved endwise. By reason of the frictiontight fit of the pin in the hole 8 of the plug, it will not only be normally retained in position, but it will be retained in locking position to interlock the plug and cylinder should attempt be made to force the lock in the manner above explained.
I do not in this case ,claim broadly means controlled by attempted surreptitious operation of the lock to block the effective operation of the bolt operating means, the same being contemplated by copending application filed even date herewith and designated by Serial N 0. 159,442. 7
Having fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, the plug having a radial aperture, of a member mounted in said radial aperture and immovable relatively to the plug in the normal operation of the lock but movable by surreptitious force to engage the cylinder and lock the plug against movement.
2. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, said cylinder having a socket in its wall, of a pin carried by the plug and immovable relatively thereto in the normal operation of the lock but capable of being forced into the socket in the cylinder upon attempted surreptitious operation of the lock and lock the plug against movement in all directions relatively to the cylinder.
3. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, said cylinder having a socket in its wall, and the plug having ribs and a hole in one of said ribs, of a radially disposed pin fitting friction-tight in the hole in the plug, said pin being adapted to be forced into the socket in the cylinder upon surreptitious tioned adjacent to the keyway of said plug, and adapted to be moved by any object forced into the keyway to engage the cylinder and lock the plug against rotation.
6. The combination of a lock cylinder havin a radial aperture, a plug movable in the cy inder and having a radial aperture normally alined with the aperture in the cylinder, and a locking pin held frictionally in the 19 aperture in the plug with its outer end flush With the circumference of the plug and its inner end at the keywav of the plug whereby the insertion ofan implement other than the proper key will drive the pin into the aperture in the cylinder to lock the plug against movement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
'FREDERIC K. HEYER.
