JAMES RGSS UPTON, 0F PEORI, ILLINOIS.
Application led March 8, 19,15. Serial ita-12,737.
To aZZ 'u2/wm t may concern.'
Be .it known that I, JAMES Ross UPTON, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Peoria, countyl of Peoria, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in `locks, and particularly that type of vlock which is called a cylinder lock, utilizing pin tumblers to control the actuation'uof the cylinder in locking and unlocking.
The object in this invention is the provision of a construction permitting locks to be oiled without the possibility ofthe oil sealing the chambers, in which the pin tumblers are mounted to move and thereby prevent their operation, due to the formation of an air cushion behind'the pin tumblers.
Further objects reside in the improvements of the construction and arrangement, which will hereinafterl appear.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, preferred embodiments of my invention, it being understood that changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims, without digressing from my inventive idea.
ln the drawings;-l `igure l represents. a
longitudinall section through a standard form of cylinder lock, showing the key inserted, different forms of pin tumblers being disclosed; Figs. 2, 3 and l represent different forms of pin tumbler-s coming within the purviewof my invention; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through one of the pin tumblers and a compartment therefor, showing another variation of my invention.
This invention has particular reference, as stated before, to cylinder locks, being shown in connection with a padlock of that type. These locks include a cylinder rotatably mounted therein and adapted to receive a key and having a plurality of recesses or sockets in the lock and in the cylinder to receive pin tumblers which are held toward'the cylinder by means of springs. Anti-friction means in the form of balls, is

provided on top of said pin tumblers and the key is so shaped as to aline one series of the pin tumblers with the edge of the cylinder and the socket therefor, so that when f the key is inserted, the cylinder may be turned to withdraw the bolt to release the shackle, it being understood that when the key is withdrawn, either partially or entirely, the lines between the pin tumblers do not aline with the edge of the cylinder and its casing and the cylinder cannot turn until the proper key is inserted. It is found 1n practice, that when these locks need lubrication, the application of 4a lubricant thereto will result in the sealing of the sockets in which the pin tumblers are mounted, so that air cushions are formed in the socktes Lor chambers, preventing a proper operation of the pin tmnbl-ers and therefore, putting the lock out of service. My invention was evolved for the purpose of obviating this disadvantage and consists in providing means, either in the pin tumblers or"in the walls of the sockets or chambersr therefor, of grooves or passages which permit the circulation and escape of air or of the lubricant, as the case may be, whereby the formation of an air or lubricant .cushion is avoided. y
ln Fig. l, the numeral l designates the lock as a. whole, having theshackle 2 which is adapted to be forced outwardly by means of spring 3, and held in locked position by means of the bolt d and spring 5. 'This bolt is removed from its locked position by means of the lug 5 on the cylinder 7, this cylinder being rotatably mounted in the socket 8 in thelock. in this lock is also provided the cylinder 5 of larger diameter -sages in the cylinder and l1 the sockets or passages in .the lock proper, which are normally 1n almement or registered with said sockets or passages l0. v In these sockets or passages l() and 1l, are positioned the plu- ."rality of series of pin tumblers i2, which are preferably in the form of cylinders, as shown in detail in FigsrQ, 3 and el, and are ofdiferent sizes, depending upon the adjustment of the lock. rllhey are normally pressed toward the cylinder by means of lll) the springs 13 and havethe anti-.friction means in the form ofballs 14, suitably `held and `11, particularly when oil or other lubricant 'is applied to the lock, I provide these tumblers with recesses or passages, certain forms being shown. In Fig. 2, it takes the form vof the Vcentral passage 16.` In Fig. 3, these take the form of the grooves 17 in the outside surface of the pin' tumblers, these grooves being straight, While in Fig.- 4, spiral grooves 18 are 'similarly provided. These are mere variations of thesame broad idea. In this connection, itis to be noted that I bevel the end edges of the pin tumblers as at 19, so that an annular passage is provided around the tumblers when4 they are mounted in position. This of course facilitates the circulation or escape of the air or lubricant.` The same idea 'may be carried into effect, as shown in Fig. 5, by
grooving the walls of the passages or sockets 10 and 11, as at 20, and having the pin tumblers With or Without grooves or passages, as desired. Y
This invention permits the oil to pass readily around or about the pin tumblers and lubricates the walls ofthe passages or sockets 10 and 11, and' at the same time, permitting the escape of the air or lubricant so as toI prevent the formation of the cushions referred to and do away with the incapacita- 4tion of the lock for use, due to lubrication.
VVhatI claim is:
1.. A cylinder lock including in combination, a) bolt, a cylinder having means thereon for actuating the bolt, said cylinder being adapted to be actuated by key, saidk cylinder and the lock having a plurality of recesses.
or sockets normally in alinement, a plurality of pin tumblers mounted in said recesses or sockets and normally held toward said cylorces thev bolt backward against the tension inder, and meansprovided in connection with said recesses or sockets and said pin tumblersy to prevent the sealing of the recesses or sockets upon the application of a lubricant to said lock. l
2. A cylinder lock including in combination, a bolt, a cylinder having means thereon i'or actuating the bolt, said cylinder being adapted to be actuated by key, saidcylinder and. the lock having a plurality of recesses or sockets normally in alinement, a plurality of pin tumblers mounted insaid recesses or sockets and normally held toward said cylinder, said pin tumblers having passages so as to permit the escape of air and lubricant to prevent the sealing of said recesses or sockets upon the application of a lubricant to the lock. x f y 3. A cylinder lock includingin combination, a bolt, a cylinder -having means thereon for actuating the bolt, said cylinder being adapted to be actuated by key, said cylinder and the lock having a plurality of recesses or sockets normally 1n alinement, a plurality of pin tumblers mounted in said recesses or y sockets and normally held towardsaid cylinder, said pin tumblers having longitudinal passages and also having transverse passages so as to permit the escape of air and lubricant to prevent the sealing of saidrecesses or sockets upon the application ofra lubricant to the lock. v
4. -As an article of manufacture, a pin tumbler oi cylindrical shape adapted to be mounted in a socket orl recess in the lock and having a longitudinal passage so that when a. lubricant is applied to said lock, the recess or socket in which the pin tumbler is mounted, will not be sealed.
