My invention relates to new; and useful improvements in fasteners and more-partio 'ularly to such a device: primarily intended.
for :use in connection with refrigeratorsand cold storage.roomcdoors, theprincipal ob ject of the invention residing in theprovision of fl'fi-tfijflnfil which maybe operated from either side :of the door forunloeking and which is automatically ifastened by spring pressure'upon closure of the door. Y
Another object of zthe invention vresldes 'III theprovision of adiousing which .is adapted to be connectedto'on'e -l 'acecfithe :door, the housing carrying the pivoted latch and one of the operating levers, the spring for. normally holding'the latch in fastening position beingenclosed within the housing.
A further object consists inproviding means for fastening .the latch inits'fastening position, a .projectionxbeing formed on the latch and extendin ithrou h an oiienin' ini thehozising for receivingxa locking member.
With the aboveand other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists inthe novel de' tails of construction and arrangements .of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they nowapp ear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be i made as will fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings: I Fig. 1 is a face view showing the fastener connected to a door. I
Fig. 2 is a rear face view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. l; and
F ig. 4 Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 indicates a door and 2 the door frame.
is a section on the line 4 -4 of My improved form of fastener consists of.
the housing 3 whichis adapted to be secured to the face of the door by means of the screws Al or other suitable fastenings. A
latch 5 extends longitudinally within the housing 3 and ispivotally connected thereto at 6, a roller 7 being mounted adjacent.
the outer free end of the latch for engagement with the keeper 8 which is secured to the door frame 2 by means of the bolts 9 and nuts 10 as shown more particularly in Fig.
} thealower end ear ear-tee r ce.
1 of the drawings; The keeper is provided adjacent each end, with: an elongated opening 11 through which the bolts 9 will more particularly .inv Fig. 3 of'the draw-x d ngs, extendsthrough the housing 3,'itheloin. 1. and the plate .20.. 'The plate 201i-s;
ethat' to whichthe housing is secured-,b.
means of the screws-21.'orothersriitable fasteniugs and is-provided with the lugs or projections 22 to which :lihb lever .23 is .piv otally connectedat :24. The. end of themed 19, which extends through the plate 20, is threaeed as shown at 25 to receivetlie internally threaded member 26 having the outwardly extending spaced horizontal arms 27 between which the lever 23 extends. The lever 23 is formed intermediate its ends with the elongated opening 28 through which a pin 29 carried by the arms 27*extends.
A vertically extending pin or projection 30 is formed on or secured to the latch 5, as shown more particularly in F 4 of the drawings, and passes through an opening housing 33 Sat 15. v-Th efi lever to that face 'OftlIGJdOOI' 1, opposite 31 formed in the top of the housing 3. A
coiled spring 32'surrounds the pin 30 between the inner wall of the housing and the top of the latch and normally holds the latch in its lowered or closing position. A removable plate 33 is secured tothe inner face of the housing3 by .lnGLIlS of a screw 3401' other suitable fastening and the latch 5'operates between this plate and the outer face of the housing. The plate 33 is positioned at a point adjacent the pin 30 and its surrounding spring 32 so that when the plate is removed access may be gained to the spring andthe removal of the latch 5 from the housing may be facilitated. I
Formed on or secured to the lowere'dge of the latch 5, intermediatethe ends thereof, is the downwardly projecting pin 35 which is adapted'to pass throughan opening. 36
. the
formed in the lower wall of the housing 3. The pin will be provided with a transiversely extending opening to receive the shackle of a lock 37.
From the above detailed description it is thought that the construction and operation will be understood. It will be noted that I have provided a fastener in which there are relatively few parts, 7 attached to or detached from the face of the door, which may be operated from either side of the door, and which may be automatically locked by spring pressure 'when the door is closed. When the door is closed the spring 32 forcesthe latch downwardly into proper engagement with the keeper 8 to hold the door in fastened or closed position. WVhen the fastener 37 is connected to the pin 35 the latch is held against vertical movement and therefore the fastener cannot be unfastened. The housing 3 is preferably connected to the outer face of door and to operate the latch from the outer face of the door the lever 14 is manipulated so that the projection 13 thereof will raise the latch 5 and release the same from the keeper 8. From the inside ofthe door the latch is raised by manipulation of the lever 23. The lever 23 will slide the rod 19 and in turn operatethe lever 14 to raise the latch 5. When the housing 3 is detached from the door the latch 5, the lever 14:, and the rod 19, with their associated parts, may be removed as a unit, it being understood which may be readily signature.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
- A fastener of the character described adapted to be connected to or removed from a door or the like asa unitary structure including a housing'having a longitudinally 7 extending recess forming an open back, a latch pivotally connected to the housing and extending longitudinally thereof in the recess, a pin carried by the latch and extending through the top of the housing, a spring surrounding the pin between the top of the housing and top of the latch, said pin andspring being located behind the front face of the housing and within the recess, a plate detachably connected to the housing and extending over the open back of the housing to form the guide for the latch, a projection'formed on the outer face of the housing, and a lever pivotally connected to the projection and engageable with the latch for operating the same.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my RICHARD JONES.
