IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SECURING HANDLES TO BRUSHES.

Specication forming part of Letters vPatent No. 170,500, dated November 30, 1875; application filed August 24, 1875.

To all'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. WHITING, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Securing Handles to Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, which will enabley others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in apparatusfor securing handles to brushes; and consists in the combination and arrangement of the devices employed, as herein more fully set forth.

On the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the lineAB, shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a plan, and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line O D, shown in Fig. 1.

a, c represent a pair of clamps, provided with one or more grooves, b b', as shown. To the clamp a is secured or made in one piece suitable guide-pieces c c c, that `are located on each side ofthe grooves b b'. Corresponding recesses d d are made in the clamp a! for the guidance of the guide-pieces c c. The projections or guide-pieces c c and the recesses d l are shown circular in the drawings; but they may to equal advantage be made-as tongues and grooves, or in a similar manner. e rep-- resents an adjustable metallic plate, resting on the top of the clamps a a', as shown, and is made adjustable by means ofthe set-screws ff, projecting through the slotted holes g g. The adjustable metallic plate e is provided with one or more perforations, h h h, arranged centrally with the grooves b b', as shown.y

The object of the said metallic plate e is to serve as a firm rest for the ferrule ofthe brush to rest upon in case the clamps a a are made of wood.

The plate e may be dispensed with if the the clamps a a. are made of metal.

In Fig. 2, t' represents the bristles of a brush,

held in the grooves b b of the clamps a a. k represents the ferrule, and l the handle, with its annular shoulder m and lower projections a n. o represents a hollow tube, that is placed around the handle l, inl such a manner that its lower end rests on the annular shoulder m. The hollow tube o serves for the purpose of driving the handlei into the brush, which is done by placing the handle l in a position as shown on the right-hand side of Fig.

l. The hollow tool o can thenbe placedV around the handle l, in a position as shown in Fig. 2, when the projections n a are easily driven into the brush by giving a blow on the upper end of the hollow tube o.

What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is`` l. The combination of the clamps a a with one or more grooves, b b', having projections c c and recesses d d on each side, and the hollow handle o, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the g'rooved clamps a a', with their grooves b b', projections c c, and recesses d d, the adjustable perforated plate e, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination with the clamps a a and l their grooves b b and plate e, the hollow handle o, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
