Description

March 5, 1929. H. G. HOSE TOY ' File M y 20, 192'? a IIIIIIIIIIII iH munm Patented Mar. 5, 1929. i
v UNITED STATES PATENT O HENRY GOWER HOSE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOY.
Application filed Kay 20,
My invention relates to toys or playthings for children, and specifically to that form of such devices in which a movable member is employed for supporting a picture or I similar object, which movable member s provided with means by whlch a clnld playing with the toy may elevate said picture into view and upon ceasing to operate the same the picture will automatically pass out of view. g
One of the objects of the invention 1s to provide a simple and easily operated toy of the character described, which shall be capable of economical manufacture.
a The invention consists in the novel con: struction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as set forth in the claims hereof, one embodiment of the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described 111 this specification. i
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the same with a picture held thereby and in an elevated'positlon suitable for viewing, the invention bemg shown attached to the tray of a childs chair or the like; and
' Fig. 2 is a side view of the invention, showing the picture in a depressed positlon and out of View.
In carrying my invention 1nto eifect 1n the embodiment thereof which I have selected for description in this specification and illustration in the accompanying drawings, I provide a base or main member 11, which, as shown in the drawings, may be of any suitable ornamental shape, as for 1nstance heart-shaped. Near the edge thereof may be arranged characters amusing or instructive to a child, as for instance the alphabet. Front supporting means 12 may be provided, and towards the rear, support ing means 13 are provided WlllCll are of such a form that they are adapted to secure the device toan article of furniture or the like, as for instance, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, these supporting means may be made to clamp over the peripheral ridge, 14, on the shelf or tray 15 of a childs chair or the like.
Secured to the rear portion of the base member 11 is a suitable member having forj. wardly extending lateral portions 16 whlch 1927. Serial No. 192,961.
have secured thereto the operating devices hereinafter explained. It will be seen that the clamping member 18 is adapted to either hang downwards in the position shown in Fig. 2, in which case the picture 19 is entirely out of the view of a child playing with the toy, or to be elevated into the position shown in Fig. 1, where the picture 19 is brought into a vertical position and into full view. The mechanism by which this movement of the picture is effected is as follows:
Pivotally attached to the sides of the base member 11 is a U-shaped lever having arms 22, which ma be provided with a handle 23. The rearwar ly extending arms of this member 22 pass through eyes 24 in the sides of the member 11 and are given something more than a complete turn therearound, so that the rear ends of these arms are'not in the same plane as the general part of the arms 22, as will be best seen by reference to Fig. 2. The rear ends of these arms terminate in eyes 25 into which are inserted links 26 which in turn engage with eyes 27 on members 28 which extend backwards and are bent sideways, passing through the lugs 21 and forming a single member between the said lugs.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 2, a picture-bearing card or the like 19 may be inserted between the members 18, whereupon, as will be seen from the drawings, the said picture hangs down entirely out of view of a child placed in front of the device, and even if not entirely out of view, nevertheless the back of the card, not showing any picture, is presented towards the child. Upon depressing the handle 23, however, which is a simple and easy operation such as can be performed by even the youngest child, the operation of the connected parts will, in a manner which will be quite obvious from the drawings, result in raising the picture-bearing card into the position shown in F 1, where it is in full view of the child, and it will remain there as long as the handle 23 is depressed. Upon the removal of the hand from the elevating mechanism, the picture at once drops into the position shown in Fig. 2 and remains there until the elevating mechanism is again operated, thus affording amusement and in struction to the child using the device.
The uses and advantages of my invention. will be obvious from an examination of the drawings and what has been said above with regard to its construction and operation. I might, however, specifically call attention to the function of the short link 46, which is a desirable feature of the invention, facilitating the upward and downward swing of the picture, and would also particularly call attention to the construction and arrange ment of the longer link 28. It will be observed that when the levers 22 are depressed, the first movement is to straighten out the short link 26 into an approximately vertical position, the second movement is to move the short link bodily upward, drawing with it the link 28, and the third movement is to draw the upper end of the link 28 forward towards the operator. When this tilting or forwardly drawing movement of the link 28 commences, the link 28 is raised so that approximately the middle portion thereof rests against the upper edge of the member 11, which acts as a fulcrum, and as the forward motion of the upper end of the link 28 continues, the lower end of the link 28 is given a backward motion, thus tending to swing the member 18 and picture card 19 backwards so as to facilitate the fourth and final movement, which is a raising of the picture into the position shown in Fig. 1. Without this particular arrangement of the links just above described, more or less of a binding effect might result, as the depression of the forward ends of the levers 22 and the consequent upward drawing of the levers 28, might not always result in the backward swing of the member 18, especially if the members 22 and 28 had in the course of use become bent more or less out of their normal shape, and so it might be difficult for a child to elevate the picture into view merely by depressing the handle 28.
It should be noted that when the member 18 is swung backward and downward into the position shown in Fig. 2, it is entirely out of view of a child sitting in front of the device, and it is therefore quite possible for the childs attendant to substitute one picture for another without being observed, thus adding to the surprise and pleasure of the child when using the toy.
Having thus described my invention, what horizontai base;
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a toy device for the amusement of children, the combination with a horizontal base member and a member directly swingingly attached to said horizontal base nie1nbor and adapted to support an amusement card in a position behind and below said of devices directly attached to said horizontal base member and adapted to swing said amusement card supporting member and thereby bring said amusement card from a position behind and below said horizontal base member into a position suitable for observation, and to permit the same to drop out of such observing position into its first-named position, such dropping of said amusement card being effected by gravity; said operative devices comprising a member directly and pivotally mounted on said horizontal base, a second member swingingly secured to said amusement card supporting member, and a link connecting said first-named member and said secondnamed member.
2. In a toy device for the amusement of children, the combination with a horizontal base member and a member directly swingingly attached to said horizontal base membe and adapted to support an amusement card in a position behind and below said horizontal base member; of means adapted to swing said amusement card supporting member from a position behind and below said horizontal base member into a position suitable for observation; said means comprising a lever directly attached to said horizontal base member and operatively connected to said amusement card supporting member and adapted when the forward part of said lever is depressed to raise said amusement card supporting member.
3. In a toy device for the amusement of children, the combination with a horizontal base member and a member directly swingingly attached to said horizontal base member and adapted to support an amusement card in a position behind and below said horizontal base member; of devices directly attached to said horizontal base member and adapted to swing said amusement card supporting member and thereby bring said amusement card from a position behind and below said horizontal base member into a position suitable for observation, and to perunit the same to drop out of such observing position into its first named position, such dropping of said amusement card being effected by gravity; said. operative devices COllllJl'lSlBg a member directly and pivotally mounted on said horizontal base, and a second member operatively connected to said first member and swingingly secured to said amusement card supporting member.
In a toy device for the amusement of children, the combination with a horizontal base member and a member directly swingingly attached to said horizontal base member and adapted to support an amusement card in a position behind and below said horizontal base member; of devices directly attached to said horizontal base member and adapted to swing said amusement card supporting member and thereby bring said amusement card from a position behind and below said horizontal base member into a position suitable for observation, and to permit the same to drop out of such observin position into its first named position; sai operative devices comprising a member directly and pivotally mounted on said horizontal base, and a second member operatively connected to said first member and swingingly secured to said amusement card supporting member.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 17th day of May, 1927.
