To llwlzomitmywncern:
Be it known that WALTER M. COLE AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, has invented certain new and useii'ul Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates to. improvements in toys'and is directed to a tojgsomewhat resembling a see-saw but is designed so that it may afi'ord amusement for a single child instead of requiring the cooperation of two children as is common in the ordinary seesaw structures. I
The objects of'the invention are to provide a toy'that is novel in construction and operation; which may be operated by onle co lapsed and folded together, when not 1n use, as to enable it to be placed under a bed or other low structure out of the way.
The invention is illustrated in the accom- 'panyingdra'win ,whereim:
Fig. 1 shows t e improved toyin perspectlveas thesame appears when set up and ready for use.
Fig 2 illustrates "the toy in vertical longitudinal section, the parts in this view ogever, being in the collapsed position, an Y Y Fig; 3 shows a bottom view of the forward.
end of the. rock bar and the parts connected thereto all as they appear when thebar is in the; collapsed on epressed position. v
' 'ferring to the drawing, the numeral5 designates two spaced apart base strips A which are connected at their forward ends to the opposite ends of a short foot-plate 6,
and has a raised or arched central 8with a vertical, slot 9 therein, and is prov the foot and at the rear ends said base str ps are connected by a comparatively long'cross-bar 7 whereby said strips will diverge as they extend from front to-rear to-forni a broad base structure. p p
The foot plate 6 at the forward ends of the base strips ispreferably'fbrmed of metal portion vided with lateral'flat flanges or feet at each side on which the forward ends of the base strips seat, suitable fastening means, such as a nail, screw or rivet 10,- extend through I plates into the ends of the base strips to rigidly connect them. 7
Between the foot plate and the rear crossbar, ll'pivotally sustain a fillcrum-trame 11 On the upper sides of or the base-strips.
- 16, as c earl is formed of bar metal that is round incrosssection and has two lateral bearing ends12,
each of which is pivotall connected to a base strip, as for examp e, by means of bearing plates 13. From the bearing ends the frame has inclined supporting stretches 14 which,'when swung upright, converge or extend inwardly with respect to the base strips, and at the upper ends of these stretches 14, '1 form in the frame two side bearin bends 15, and a central bearing bend It will t us be seen that the fulcrumframe is formed ofa sin le piece of bar metal andlthat the bearmg bend 16 is located at a midway point with abend 15 shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
on each side thereof and with a lateralbearing it extend around the central'bearing bend 16 of the fulcrum frame whereby tovpivotally connect the two at what may. be I.
termed the rear end of the brace-bar.
lhe forward end of the said brace-bar 17,
is providedwith an up-turned hook 19 through which there is punched a hole or perforation and when it is desired to hold the fulcrumframe in an upri ht position,
this 'up-turned hook 19, is passe u through the slot 9 in the arched portion 0 the foot plate so as to engage said plate, as-shown in Fig. 1, of thedrawing.
Above the base strips and fulcrum-frame there is provided a horizontal rock-bar 20,
to the under side of which the bearing bends 15, of the fulcrum-frame are pivotally con nected by means of bearing lates 21, for a purpose that will-presently explained.
. The rearend-of the rock-bar 20 is provided with a central longitudinal slot 22,-
and a 'seat'23 rests upon the upper side of too said rock-bar and has a bolt 24, projecting downwardly therefrom and through the slot 80 that a wing nut 25 on the lower end of the bolt, may look the seat in any longitudinally-adjusted position it may be placed on said rock-bar.
The seat has a pivoted vertical back 26, which maybe swung forwardly'to a horizontal position when the toy is not in use so .as to make the same compact and more readily stored away.
Onthe bottom or underside of the seat,
' one on each side of the rock-bar and these brackets sustain a cross-bar 28 which has a central off-set 29, that extends down and under the rook-bar, so that the rock-bar projects through this central off-set 29 in the cross-bar.
Two ends 30 are bent down from the cross-bar 28 and the lower extremities of these ends sustain a foot-rest or cross-bar 31.
The forward end of the rock-bar 20 is connected to one end of a spiral or coiled spring 32, while the other end of said spring is provided with a hook 33 which is detachably connected to the upturned end of the hook 19 on r the forward end of the brace-bar 17,-the spring hook '33, passing through the erforation in the said hook 19 after the atter has been inserted in the slot 9 of the foot-plate. This spring connection holds the hook 19, in engagement with the foot-plate 6 and also yieldingly draws the forward end of the rock-bar 20 down so as to normally keep the seat-end of said rockbar in the position shown in Fig. 1.
When the toyis in the osition shown in Fig.-'l,.of the drawing tlie same is "ready for use and a child may be laced on the seat 23, which will be adjuste on the rockbar 20 so as to be practically balanced with respect to the fulcrum-frame, whereb slight up and down exertionof the chil in an e o rt to rock will cause the bar 20 to rock in the bearings 21.
When it is desired to put the to away i the seat 23 will be drawn rearwar ly and removed from the rock-bar and the foot rest 31 then swung up so as to rest on top of said bar as the seat is returned as shown in Fig. 2.
The hook 33 of the spring will then be detached from hook 19 of the brace bar 17 and the latter then disconnected from The fulcrum 'frame 11 ma then ha y rocked in the bearings 13, and. t e rock-bar 20 thus lowered into the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein the entire structure is renderedcompact.
By pivoting the back 26, the lattermay be swun down andmaterially reduce the vertical eight of the toy when "in the col-- lapsed position so that the device ma be pushed under a bed and gotten onto the way when not in use.
engaging the other end of said rock-bar. 2.
he combination with a base-structure, of a fulcrum means pivotally attached to the base-structure soas to swing with respect thereto; movable means for holding the fulcrum-means in an upri ht operating position; a rock-bar sustaine by the piv-- oted fulcrum-means and a spring attached to one end of the rock-bar whereby when the means .for holding the fulcrum-means is colla sed the rock-bar and fulcrum-means may 'e lowered toward the base-structure.
3. The combination with a base-structure,
of a fulcrum-frame pivotally attached at one end to the base-structure; a rock-bar pivotally sustained by the fulcrum-frame so that'the end at one side'of said frame will be shorter than that {end at the opposite side of said frame; a spring attached to the shorter end of the rock-bar; a seat adjustably secured to the longer end of said bar, and means. forholding the fulcrumframe in the upright operating position.
4. The combination with a base structure,
of a fulcrum device pivotally attached to the base structure whereby it may be moved from substantially aihorizontal to substantiall a vertical position; a rock-bar pivotal y attached to the fulcrum device; a seat on one end of the rock-bar; yielding means connecting the other end of the rockbar and a brace bar engaging the fulcrum device to hold the latter in the elevated position.
5. The combination with a base structure having a'slotted means atone end. thereof,- of a fulcrum device pivoted to the base structure so as to swing upwardl therefrom; a rock-bar pivotally carrie at. the free end of the fulcrum device; a seat at one end of the rockbar; a brace bar attached to the free end of said fulcrum device and having a hook toengage and pass through the slotted means on the base structure and a springhavin one end engaging the said hook and its at or end attac e to the rockbar;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. I
