Description

vA. KOMP,
ORNAMENTAL FABRICS FOR SKIRTS AND'OTHEB. ARTICLES.
No. 170,380. Patented Nov. 23,1875.
ll igg l llu E N. PETERS. PNQTOLITflDGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT KOMP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTAL FABRICS FOR SKIRTS AND OTHER ARTICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,380, datedNovemher 23, 1875; application filed October 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KoMP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fabric for Skirts and other Articles, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification:
My invention relates to an improved fabricproved fabric. Fig. 2is a cross-section thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter a designates a layer of muslin or other textile material, and b is a layer of felt, which are united by an intervening layer, a, of gutta-percha. In the felt b are formed holes 01, which contain mosaics E of colored cloth, and l prefer to employ far this purpose flannel of different colors, either alone or in connection with other woolen cloth less nappy than flannel. The material composing these mosaics E is united with the muslin a by the gutta-percha c, or other cement "used for uniting the muslin and felt.
In carrying out my invention I prepare a layer of muslin and felt, and by suitable dies produce in the felt holes or apertures in'symmetrical order. I then lay the felt and muslin on each other, having first procuredathin piece of gutta percha, such as commonly used for cementing purposes, and place the same between the felt and muslin. Oloth mosaics, such as I have described, are then laid or inserted in the holes previously formed in the felt, when the Whole is subjected to the action ofa heated flat-iron or heated rollers, whereby the gutta-percha becomes molten, and a firm union of the felt and the mosaics with the muslin takes place. By this means I obtain a fabric which is adapted for the manufacture of ladies skirts and a variety of other articles, such as sacques, blankets, &c., which is cheap, and which has a very elegant appearance.
It is obvious that any desirable textile or fibrous material may be substituted for the muslin and felt, and I do not wish to confine myself exclusively to the use of these materials.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved fabric for the manufacture of ladies skirts and other articles, composed of muslin and felt, or other textile or fibrous materials, which are united by gutta-percha or other cement, and ornamented with mosaics, produced by the combination of pieces of cloth of different colors inlaid in the felt and united with the muslin, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereuntoset my hand and seal this 4th day of October, 1875.
