The object of my invention is to furnish for general use collars, cufl's, shirt-fronts, and other articles, which may be furnished not only at the same or even less price than the paper goods in use, but which are also, on account of the material used, neater and stronger,
and hold out a greater length of time, especially in the summer season. My invention consists in manufacturing collars, cufi's, shirtfronts, and other articles of two or more layers of muslin, which are intimately connected and stifl'ened by starch mixed with spermaceti and indigo-blue, called bluing, and finished at the outside by a covering of starch, in imitation of the linen articles. The wearing edges are folded over to prevent the unraveling of the same, and increase the neater appearance of the articles.
A in the drawing represents a collar, cuff, shirt-front, or similar article usually manufactured of paper or linen for the general use of the public. These articles are made of two or more layers, B, of muslin of equal or various degrees of fineness, the inner surface permitting the use of coarser muslin, while the outer surface requires a finer quality. The layers B are smoothly and evenly affixed to each by means of starch mixed with spermaceti and bluing, and passed through rollers under suitable pressure to secure the intimate connection of the sheets. The outer layer B is then prepared with starch and a suitable amount of bluing, which is pressed in such a manner into the muslin that the appearance of linen is obtained, the various articles being then cut out with or without a lap, O, of suffic ient width at the exposed and wearing edges, that they may be folded over and produce fully the same effect as linen articles.
The greater strength and consistency of such collars or cuffs enables them to withstand to a greater degree the strain to which they are exposed. The wearing out and roughen-- ing of the edges of paper collars-.so annoying anddisagreeable in hot weather-is there by fully avoided, as the muslin articles retain their shape in the same manner as linen goods.
The eheapness of the muslin, together with the simple process of their manufacture, ad mits of producing the muslin articles at the same or less cost than those of paper, while they recommend themselves on account of the superior merits to the general favor and use of the public.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- As a new manufacture, a shirtcollar, cuff, or similar article of wearing apparel, consisting of two or more layers of muslin cemented together by a mixture of starch, spermaceti, and washingindigo, known as bluing, and otherwise prepared and finished, substantially in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
