Description

Patented Feb. 26, 1929. t
'JAMES aGUINEY, or COLLINSVILLE, nanua.
i PENCIL SHARPENEB.
A lication filed October s, 1925. Serial se. c,a54.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel, simple and highly eflicientlead pointing attachment for pencil sharpeners of the various types now on the market. e
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangem'ent of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
r Figure l is a top plan view of a pencil sharpener embodying my invention, e
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the pencil sharpen'er,
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the pencil sharpener,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by .the line 4-4 of F igure 2,
F igure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6 is a similar view taken on the planes indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters. The device comprises a body 1 provided With recessed top, bottom and lateral sides 2,
3 and 4, respectively. The bottom side 3 is provided with longitudinally extending ribs 5 to permit the 'device to be readily held against movement during the sharpening of .a pencil. The body 1 is provided with a conical bore 6 which extends longitudinally thereof, and is provided in one of its lateral sides 4 with a longitudinally extending slot 7 which register-s with the bore 6. A blade 8 is secured to the side 4 in which the slot 7 is located, and the cutting edge thereof enters the bore 6 through said slot. The blade 8 is recessed into the bottom wall of the side 4 and is Secured in place by a. cap screw 9.
The body 1 is provided with a second conical bore 10 which is considerably smaller transversely than the bore 6 and is located adjacent the side 2. The bore 10 extends longitudinally of the body 1, and the side 2 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 11 which communicates with and extends throughout the entire length' of the bore 10. A blade 12 is recessed in the side 2 and is secured in place by a cap screw 13. The cutinclined position.
site directions against eng edge ef the blade 12 extends through the slotll into the bore 10.
The body 1 is provided with a recess 14 which extends from the top side 2 to the bot tomside 3 and which opens out through said sides and end of the body. A lead pointing attachment which comprises a block 15, a
casing 16 and blades 17, is Secured in the recess 14 by a cap screw 18. The bottom wall of the recess14 nclines downwardly and forwardly so as to support thelead pointing attachment in a downwardly and forwardly e The blades 17 have a downwardly convergent relation, and the cutting edges of the blades and that portion of the casing 16 directly opposite said edges also have a downwardly convergent relation. The upper and lower ends of the casin 16 are open, and the sides thereof are provded with openings 19 through which the cuttings 'of the lead discharge. The block 15 is provided at its lower end with a downwardly extending lugl through which the block attaching screw 18 passes. The rear portion of the casing` 16 surrounds the block 15, and
these parts may be welded or Secured to-.
ether in any other suitable manner. The blades 17 are carried by the block 15, and they are Secured to the block ?by having their rear portions embedded in the block.
When it is desired to sharpen a pencil of the average size, the pencil is placed in the bore 6 and rotated against the cutting ed 'of the blade' 8. A smaller penciI may sharpened by placing it in the bore 10 and rotating it against the cutting ed e of the blade 12. The lead of the eneii may be pointed by inserting it in the upper end of the casing 16 and rotating the pencil in oppothe cutting edges of the blades 17. If desired, the end of the lead of a pencil may be sharpened by rotating it V against the cutting edge of but one of the blades 17 If, however, the point of the lead is rotated first against one and then against 100 the other of cutting edges of the blades 17, the point of the lead may besharpened in a comparatively short time. The lead pointing attachment may be used in connection with pencil sharpeners of types other than the type 106 shown in the drawing.
While I have described the principle of o eration of the invention, together with t e device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it' un- 110 derstood that the device shown is merely i11ustrative,-a1d that such' changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention 'as claimed.
What is claimed is 2-- v v ,p A device of the character set forth, comprising a body provided With a recess opening out through an end and opposite sides thereof, a casing having a portion 'thereof positioned in the recess in contact with the bottom and side walls of the recess, a` block arranged within and Secured to said portion of the cas'- r 'ing and provided at one end with a lug exv tending beyond the 'casing, si block attaching related and having portions thereof embedded in the block, andthe cutting edges of the 'blades and thatportion of the casng directly opposite said edges being angularly related. in testmony whereof I aflix mv signature.
