IMPROVEMENT IN CLIPS FOR SPLlClNG BROKEN TIRES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 170,371, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 26, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. HODDINOTT, of Baltimore'city, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olips for Splicing Broken Tires and Broken Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a clip for carriage and wagon tires and springs that may be easily and quickly applied without the use of other tools, especially when some distance from any smith-shop or wheelwright.

The invention consists of a spring-clip provided with a hook, that engages with a hinged or pivot-ed cross-plate, in which is arranged a slot for the reception of the hook on the springclip. In the center of this hinged plate is arranged a clamping-screw with a pad to be operated by the thumb and fingers.

I will now more definitely describe my invention, referring to the drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the clip in position on a carriage-tire, which is shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front view of the clip, showing a part of the folly and tire. Fig. 3 is a top view oft-he clip.

In the drawing, A represents the springclip, provided at one end with an eye, a, for the hinged plate B, and at the other with a spring-hook, I), which engages with the said cross-plate B through the slot 0. The plate B is secured to the clip A by a rivet, d, and is threaded in its center for the reception of the thumb-screw O, which is provided with a plain, roughened, or toothed plate or pad, D, that fits against the felly, and prevents it from being bruised or defaced.

The clip may be made of any suitable material and of different sizes, to suit buggies, carriages, express or other wagons 'or carts.

The operation is as follows: The two ends of a broken tire being brought together, the clip A is applied with the hingedplate B thrown back or opened, and this plate B is then thrown over the hook I), and by its springing end and hook it is' held in place on the clip A. The thumb-screw O, with the clamping platev or pad D, is then screwed down against the felly or spring, and thus secures the clip in position.

The advantages of my improved clip are, that it can be carried in the pocket; that all the parts are connected together, and no single one liable to become lost from the other; that-tit can be readily and quickly applied in case of an accident, which very often occurs when a great distance from any smith or repair shop, and it can be furnished at a very moderate cost.

It can be as readily applied to broken springs as tires or any other similar parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of a spring-clip, A, hinged plate B, thumb-screw O, and pad D, constructedsubstantially as shown and specified.
