kMy invention relates to car underframes and, generally stated, involves' a metallic built-up structure of uniform strength value adapted to receive the buiiing and pulling shocks which exceed the capacity of the draft rigging.
To this end the principal object of my presentfinvention consists in providing a draft arm formed of metal draft plates each adapt ed to extend upon both sides of the bolster and provided with strengthening means, said strengthening means also extending upon both sides ofthe bolster and arranged to form a maximum sectionat'the rear thereof and in the plane of the car sill, thereby preventing all tendencies ofthe frame totip or rotate in resisting loads under service conditions.

There are other features of the invention as will be pointed out hereafter in connection with the description of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved metallic construction of underframe, an intermediate portion thereof broken away.

'While the construction `which is the subject of the present invention may be used in connectionwith any preferred forni ofdraft'r gear, in the present instance,lit is shown as applied to a threeley draft gear of the Fank low type indicated diagramn'iatically in dot and dash lines in Figure l. y
The draft plates 5--5 which are of a'width exceeding the width of the center sills to a `considerable extent, are secured to and overlap the innei` faces of the sills so that the for* ward portions of saiddraft plates extendwell nr au) below the sills. Sheet plates 6 are connected by means of rivets 7 to the depending portions of the draft plates, and a plurality of key slots are formed in each cheek plate, said slots being arranged to register with the series of key slots provided in the draft plates, as shown. Each draft plate 5 is recessed or cut away intermediate the ends thereof, said cut away portion forming a bolster receiving opening or recess 8, clearly shown in Figure 2. rThe upper wall of the opening 8 is preferably adapted to rest upon the top flange of the bolster substantially coincident with the lower face of the center sills.
The depending portions of the draft plates are reinforced forwardly of the bolster by a plurality of stiffening members in the form oflower angle bars 9, vthe vertical flange of the respective bars being connected to the outer faces of the draft plates by means of rivets 10, a relatively large number of the rivets being located near the bolster and other of said rivets serving to connect the cheek plates to the draft plates. The lower flanges of the angles 9 extend outwardly of the draft plates and are connected by a tie member or plate 11 riveted to the lower flanges forwardly of the bolster. A bottom gusset plate 12 is riveted to said tie plate and a ort-ion of the lower flanges of the outer angle members 9, said gusset plate being further connected to the bottom flange of the bolster by means of rivets 18. The stilfenino angles 9 ertend substantially the length or the draftplates from the front edge of the bolster opening to the forward ends of said draft plates.
Intermediate stiffcning members or angle bars are arranged upon the outside of the draft plates and above the angle bars 9, said stiffening angles 14: extending the length of the draft plates forwardly of the bolster and havingtheir horizontal flanges substantially coincident with the lower portion or bottom flange of the center sills. The vertical flanges of the angle members le are connected to the draft plates by means of a plurality of longitudinally arranged rivets 15, a greater mimber of said rivets being provided relatively close to the bolster and other of said rivets serving to connect the cheek plates to the draft plates.
Arranged intermediate the ends of th draft platesv and positioned above the stiffening bars 14 are longitudinally disposed stiffening members in the form of angle b rs 16 connected to the opposite inner faces of the draft ilates by means of relatively closely spaced rivets l?. The vertical flanges of the respective angle bars 16 are adapted to overlie the bolster and project beyond the front and rear edges thereof, the horizontal flanges of said angle bars 16 being connected by means of bolts 18 to the upper flange of the bolster. Each stiffening member 16 is arranged adjacentthe bolster recess or opening ing between the draft plates and otherwise provide for the utilization of parts of standard measurements, as will be understood.
The forward end of the channel 19 is connected to the end sill by means of the angle member 22, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and e. The forward lower ends of the draft plates are arranged to extend beneath the end sill, as shown.
At a point preferably adjacent and slightly in the rear of the bolster the continuous reinforcing or stiffening member 19 is inclined downwardly to conform to the tapering rear end portions 5=L of the draft plates. The respective upper and lower edges of the rear end of the draft plates are inclined rearwardly, the lower edge of each of said plates being inclined upwardly and the upper edges of said plates being inclined downwardly, as clearly shown in Figure 2, both of said inclined portions converging to a` point back of the bolster and associated framing to provide a maximum crosssectional area coincident with the plane of the center sills. The tapered rear ends of the draft plates are fur ther reinforced by intermediate stiffening membersV formed of angle bars 23 having their vertical flanges connected byrivets 24 to the outer faces of the -draftplates l he lower edges of the tapered rear ends of the draft plates are reinforced by means of :ingle members 25 having their vertical flanges connected tothe draft plates by a plurality of rivets 26. At the rear ends of said angle members 25 and the continuous channels 19, the connecting rivets are arranged relatively close, as shown, to form a strong connection at this point. The forward portions of the horizontal flanges of the angle bars 25 are transversely connected by means of a bottom tie plate 27, as clearly shown in Figures 2, 3 and 5. .A gusset plate 28 unites the rear portion of the draft plates to ythe bolster, said gusset plate being connected by rivets 29 to the bottom flange of said bolster, and to `the bottom tie plate 27 and portions of the horizontal flanges of the angle bars 25 by means ofl rivets 30, as shown in Figures 2, Sl and l5.
An underframe constructed in accordance with my present invention provides a comparatively simple and effective association of continuous and reinforced draft pla-tes having their innerends firmly tied at therear of thebolster and in a plane relatively close and substantially coincident as farV as prac tical tothe plane in 4which'the greatest stress is transmitted `to the underframinv. It will be apparent that I have provided a strong and relatively light weight underframe for railway cars in which the means reinforcing the draft plates prevents any tendency of the frame to tip,`the angulardisposition or inclined arrangement of the stiening members at the rear of the bolster acting, together with the tapered ends of the draft plates, to counteract any tendency of the frame to roe tate when subjected to load stresses under service conditions.
l/Vhile I have illustrated a draft arm in con nection with a three-key draft rigging, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the device herein illustrated and described Ina-y be advantageously utilized in connection with the morel modern type of draft rigging shown, for example, in the patent to-Symington, No. 1,097,738, dated May 26, i914.
I have described my invention in .detail so that its nature and the manner of using it may be fully understood by those skilled in the art. However, the specific terms herein are used in their descriptive sense rather than in their limiting sense, and the scope of the invention is defined in the claims.
I claim:
Vl. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills, bolster' and end sill, of draft plates having their forward ends extending beneath said end sill and each havinga portion fitting over said bolster, means reinforcing said draft plates on each side of said bolster, and angular stilfening members for said draft plates overlying said bolster and reinforcing means.
2. In a. car underframe, the combination with center sills, bolster and end sill, of draft plates having their forward ends arranged beneath said'end sill and each having a por tion tting over said bolster, means reinforcing said draft plates forwardly and rearwardly of the bolster, stiifening means overlying said reinforcing means and having portions thereof connected to saidbolster, and means connecting said reinforcing n'ieans to said bolster.
3. In a car underframe, the combination with center sills, bolster and end sill', of draft plates each having a portion lit-ting over said bolster, means stiffening said draft plates forwardly and rearwardly of said bolster, said rearwardly extending stiffening means terminating` in a plane spbstantially coincident with the lower portion of the center sills, and a continuous reinforcing member overlying said stiifening means and having the rear end thereof terminating at a point substantially coincident with said lower portion of the center :sills `and adjacent the rearwardly extending stiifening means.
