To all whom t may concern:
Be it known tliat I, HOWARD L. IvGEnH soLL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of White Plains, county of fest chester, and State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Underframings, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to draft arms for railway cars, of the type forming the subject of my pending application Serial No. 253,385, filed September 10, 1918; the object of the present invention being to provide for the strengthening of the bolster by the ap'- plication to the top thereof of a plate extending out well toward the end ofthe bolster and projecting backwardly, and being secured to a pair of draft arms associated with the center sills. It consists further in the extension of a tieplate which is secured to the lower margins of the draft sills forward of the bolster under and attaching the same to the bolster.
A further object of the invention is to `strengthen the entire underframe of the car by the addition ofk subsills back of the bolster, and which may extend from bolster to bolster. Iii this case the backwardly extending plate above mentioned will be secured to the sub-sills and tie them together, and the lower tie-plate may be extended back beyond the bolster and secured to the lower inirgins of the sub-sills. This con struction secures great strength and rigidity, and is especially valuable in reinforcing a weak or defective bolster.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail plan view, partly in section, of the underfraniing of a car showing the draft arms and reinforcing plates;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of construction; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In carrying out iny invention I employ a pair of east draft arms 10, 11, substantially of the form shown in my said pending application. Each of these draft arms eomprises a body portion 14, provided with the Specification of Letters Patent.

usual draft and bulling shoulders 15, 16. The body portion of the draft arm is in line with and extends substantially to the bolster, generally designated by the numeral 12.
The body portion 111 is provided at its lower margin with an outstanding flange 18, and at its upper portion with an outstanding flange 19, this latter flange being adapted to fit against the under facing of a center sill 30 of a car. Extending upwardly from the body portion 14 is a flange 20, adapted to fit against the inner side face of the center sill. This upstaiiding flange is continued backwardly over the bolster for a considerable distance, and the arm is iirinly secured to the center sill by means of suitable bolts.
A tie and bracing plate 21 is riveted to the flanges 18 of the two draft arms forward of the bolster, and extends backwardly under the bolster and is securely riveted thereto. The width of this plate may be as great as the exigencies of the service may indicate. Preferably it will extend well out to the side Ibearings (not shown). Its forward inargins are cut away diagonally from the draft arms to the bolster, and to these oblique margins there are preferably riveted angle plates 22 for the purpose of securing greater rigidity.
A similar plate 23 is attached to the upper face of the bolster 12. This plate extends outwardlyT as far as may be desired, preferably well to the sidebearings, and is securely riveted to the bolster. It extends backwardly a considerable distance, and is riveted to the flanges 19 of the two draft arms. Its rearward corners are cut off, giving it an oblique margin extending from the draft arm to the bolster. In order to accommodate the plate 23 the center sills are preferably recessed in their lower faces, and the draft arin is upwardly offset.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, there is added to the car frame a pair of sub-sills, as 2st, one underlying each of the center sills, and each extending backwardly from-the bolster. In practice these sub-sills may extend from bolster to bolster. Such sub-sills may be of any preferred crosssection, channel beams being quite suitable.y The rivets securing the plate 23 to the flanges 19 of the draft arms extend through flanges of the sub-sills, as shown in Fig. 4.
The plate 21 will, in this construction, be extended backwardly beyond the bolster, as
shown at 3l, and secured to the sub-sills as by means of rivets, as shown. The rearward extension of the plate 2l may be of substantially the same configuration as the portion thereof forward of the bolster, and may, of course, be similarly reinforced at its oblique margins. It ties the sub-sills together at the bottom, as does the upper plate at the top.
By the construction described the stresses of draft and builing are widely distributed throughout the bolster. While the invention is applicable to new cars, it is especially designed for use in rebuilding old cars and adapting them for the much heavier service incident to modern practice. In these old cars not only are the sills deficient in strength for modern requirements, but the bolster-s are equally deficient and in many instances have become defective from use. It is, of course, of prime importance that as many of the original parts of the old cars be used as possible, and the present invention secures the desired strengthening even though the bolster may have become somewhat defective.
Vhile the bolster l2 is shown as of I-section, the invention is applicable to cars having holsters of other forms.
The construction illustrated is of the form which, so far as I am now advised, is most desirable, but various changes of detail may be made without 'departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination with a bolster and a pair of draft arms, each of the latter comprising a body portion in line with the bolster and an extension arching' over and projecting beyond the bolster, of a plate secured to the lower margins of the body portion of the two arms and extending laterally therefrom and backwardly under and being secured to the bolster adjacent to both of its longitudinal margins.
2. The combination with a bolster and a pair of draft arms, each of the latter comprising a body portion in line with the bolster and an extension arching over and projecting beyond the bolster, of a plate secured to the lower margins of the body portion of the two arms and extending laterally therefrom and backwardly under and being secured to the bolster adjacent to both of its longitudinal margins, and a plate secured to the rearward extensions of the two draft arms and extending laterally `.therefrom andi forwardly over and being attached to the bolster adjacent to both of its longitudinal margins.
3. The combination with a bolster, of a pair of draft arms arching over and extending beyond the bolster, and a. plate secured to the under faces of the two arms and extending laterally therefrom and projecting forwardly over and being attached to the bolster adjacent to both of its longitudinal margins.

The combination with a pair of wooden Center sills, a bolster, and a pair of draft arms secured to the sills and arching over the bolster, of a pair of sub-sills located below the center sills and extending backwardly from the bolster, and a plate secured to the under faces of the two arms forward of the bolster' and extending laterally therefrom and backwardly beyond the bolster and being secured thereto and to the sub-sills,
rlhe combination with a pair of wooden center sills, a bolster, and a pair of draft arms secured to the sills and arching over the bolster, of a pair of sub-sills located below the center sills and extending backwardly from the bolster, and a plate secured to the under faces of the rearward extensions of the arms and extending backwardly from the bolster and being secured thereto and to the upper faces of the sub-sills.
6. The combination with a pair of wooden center sills, a bolster, and a pair of draft arms secured to the sills and arching over the bolster, of a pair of sub-sills located below the center sills and extending backwardly from the bolster, a plate secured to the under faces of the two arms forward of the bolster and extending laterally therefrom and backwardly beyond the bolster and being secured thereto and to the sub-sills, and a plate secured to the under faces of the rearward extensions of the arms and extending backwardly from the bolster and being secured thereto and to the upper faces of the sub-sills.
