l'e it known that l, Donato S. Bannows, a citizen ofthe United ybtatcs, residing at bester, in the county `of ilffonroe and state of New York, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Car-Unflerframes; and l do hereby declare the following to a -full, clear, and exact description of the invention, anchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to car underframes and more particularly to means for replacing the wooden draft sills or timbers in woorflen car framing, so as to permit the employmenty of the modern types of draft rigging in connection with wooden underframe cars.
The principal object of my invention, broadly stated, is to provide a metallic draft sill substitute which is easily attached to the old wooden center sills and which permits the application to this type of car of any of the modern types of draft riggi'ig, and which at the same time reinforces and strengthens the wooden underframe so as to enable the same to withstand the additional weight of the draft rigging parts and the heavy shocks of bufling and draft of modern service conditions. To this end the main features of my invention comprise a pair of angle bars each of which is adapted to partially embrace the adjacent center sill, one flange of each angle bar being extended vertically and the other flange extended horizontally and abutting the lower face of the adjacent center sill, said angle irons each being provided with depending portions connected to the lower flanges thereof, the said depending portions forming a housing or container for the draft rigging, and means for further reinforcing the said angle irons adjacent the body bolster.

The horizontal or transversely extending flange 9 of each angle bar 8 is adapted to underliel and extend alongl the lower face of the adjacent sill l. To the lower face of each angle bar there is connected preferably by means of the rivets l0 an I-beam draft sill 1l, each draft sill ll being adapted to extend from a point adjacent the bolster 5 to a point in front of the end sill 3. To the outwardly projecting ends of the said draft sills is connected the striking casting l2 which serves to tie the draft sills together and also serves to transmit batting blows to the end sill and through the latter to the car center sills. The draft sills 1l are also tied together adjacent their outer ends by means of the carry iron 13, and may, and preferably ,are also further connected by means of tie plates such as are illustrated .at 14.
For convenience I have shown the draft sills provided with a plurality of slots l5, 16 and 17 which are adapted to receive the transversely disposed keys of the well known Farlow three-key draft rigging. When this type of draft rigging is employed I preferably nterpose between the bolster 5 and the rear follower thereof a back-stop 18 Iwhich may comprise a wooden block provided with a metallic face plate 19. To the rear of the bolster, forming a brace for the same, l connect the wooden filler blocks 20 which blocks hold the bolster from rearward movement under buffmg action of the draft rigging. l

This lateral spreading also is counteracted by the striking casting 12 whih is firmly riveted to the, projecting ends of the draftbeams ll'and bythe carryiron 13 and the tie-plate 14.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a car underframe the combinationwithV a pair of wooden center sills, Van end sill and a bolster, of a composite draft arm compris* ing an angle bar upper portion and a flanged I-beam lower portion, and rivets extending through the upper flange of the said I-beams on opposite sides of the webs thereof, for
rigidly connecting the said portions and means for connecting the said draft arms to the said center sills.
