Description

J. R. BLAKESLEE. MACHINES FOR MAKING BOLTS, RIVETS, m. No.170,151.
Patented Nov. 23, 1875.
UNITED'STATES i-PAT-ENT OF ICE ,iorin 1t. BLAKESLEE, on BROOKLYN, 'ASSIGNOR To F. e. Mints, PETER .;GEBLAOH,-AND RUDOLPH.P.GERLAOH,OF OLEVELANROHIO.
' IMPROVEMENT IN'MA CHINFES FOR. MAKING BOLTS, RNETS, ac.
Y Specification forming m of LettersFatent No. 1f7o. .151,uated November 23,1815, application filed I October 25,1875.
To, cllwhomi-t may concerni the following is a specification:
This inventionyrelates to certain improve- 'ments in apparatus for making rivets, carcoupling pins, bolts, and other similar articles, its object being to produce ,a-machine by means of which-the rivets, pins, or bolts canbe turned outcomplete ready for the market, the cutting,
heading, and pointing of the same being accomplished at one heat after the bars-leave the rolls, and by means of which the rivets; pins, or bolts can be formed with either round,
7 square, or other shaped heads in amore perfeet and expeditious manner than heretofore and my invention consists in the combination, with horizontally-arranged forming and cutting dies and a heading-die or dies, of a clamping-die for clamping and holding the bar or blank outside of the cutting and forming dies, for the purpose of leaving the end of the bar squarely cut to be presented to the action of the heading-die for the formation of the neXt pin or bolt, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my apparatus. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a detached view of the clampingdie; Fig. 4, a detached view of the heading-die; and Fig. 5. a detached view of the feedin g die employed in forming a squareheadedbolt.
The letter A represents the frame or bed of the machine, which carries the various working parts of the same, and which is substantially made of iron or other suitable material, in order to bear the strainto which it is sub.- jected. .13 represents the driving-shaft journaled near one end in the frame A, the ends projecting at each side, one end being provided with a driving-wheel, O, and cams D and E, for operating the clamping and pointin g dies, and the other with the cams F F for operating the lever G, which gives motion to the sliding forming-die H, which works in a opening 70.
recess formedin one side of the frame A for y the purpose, Said lever Gr is provided with a frictionwheel, g, at one end working between the cams F F, and isconnected to the sliding die G at the other by means, of a link, I, being pivoted near the center to an abutment, a, at
the side of the frame or bed A. K represents a stationary but removable die, provided with .anopening, k, andadaptedto besecnred in'a dovetailed recess, in the inner side of the front end=of the frame A, just opposite the feed-opening, the bar or blank being, fed through the The said die consists of .two parts, k and R the part 70 forming one jaw of the clam ping-die. The other partlc of the clamping-die is made movable, and adapted to slide in a recess formed on the inner side of the front of the frame A, and extending through the side of the same, a similarly-shaped recess being formed in the die is, in order to allow said jaw k to work closely up to the aperture k. The jaw 70 consists of a bar of metal beveled at its outer end, which sets against the similarly-beveled end of the sliding bar L, which moves in a recess on the inner side of the movable jaw of the pointing-die M, and moves in a box, N, secured to the side of the frame A. The rear end-of the sliding bar L sets against the cam E on the drivingshaft, and the rear end of the movable jaw of the pointing-die against the cams D on the drivingshaft, both being pressed backward in contact with their respective cams by the spring P between the jaws of the pointing-die M. k, Fig.5, represents a die to be substituted for the part 70 when the the machine is to be employed for forming square-headed rivets or pins. Said die sets in the place of the part It in such manner that its edges shall be directly in line with the upper recesses of the formingdies, so as to not cut the bar, but allow it to be headed and cut afterward. The formingdies G and G are provided on their adjoining faces with the recesses g and 9 the lower recesses of which are squared at their ends adjoining the heading-dies R B, the upper recesses being semicircular throughout their entire length. The heading-dies are secured to operated by means of pitman, T, attached to a crank of the driving-shaft B. The lower die is provided with a circular recess for forming round-headed bolts, rivets, or pins, the upper A, and consists of twojaws, m and m, one of which, m, is stationary, and the other, m,
movable, and actuated by the cams D on the driving-shaft of the machine. The adjacent sides of said jaws are provided with recesses, between which the points-of the rivets, pins,
or bolts are formed. The feed-apertureis madedetachable, as shown in .Fig. 5, in such man-' ner that. it can be removed and replaced from time to time when worn or injured.
The operation of my apparatus is asifollo ws:
The heated rod as it comes'from the rolls-is:
inserted through the opening 70, thedies G and G being separated for the purpose. The clamping-die then closeswaround said bar, and the sliding die G advances-toward the die G passing the aperture is and cuttingofl the bolt, rivet, or pin, and forcing/it :into the forming-:.
recesses at the same time the heading-die advances, and is forced against the-end-of the bolt, upsetting the metal and formingthe head. The dies G G and heading-dies then I separate, and the rivet, pin, or bolt is removed by the action of the clearing-arms dropping below, after which they are taken up'and sub- 'mitted to the action of the pointing-die M.
The movable jaw m of said jaw receives a-reciprocating motion by means of the cams D and: spring P striking repeated blows upon the ends of therivets, bolts, orpins, which are held between the pointing recesses, the number of said blows depending upon the number of the said cams.
In forming square-headed dies the part k of the die K is removed and the die It substituted in itsplace. the upper recesses on the forming-dies, and is clamped and headed without cutting, the bolt being cut off afterward by suitable means.
What I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
The combination of the horizontallyarranged forming and cutting. dies, the heading die or dies, and the clamping-die for clamping andholding the bar or blank outside of said cutting and forming dies, for the purpose of leavingathe end of the bar squarely cut to be presented to theaction of the heading-die for the formation of the next pin or bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI havev hereunto-set my hand in the presence of the subscribing, witnesses. I
JOHN R. BLAKESLEE.
