Application filed August 28, 1926, Serial No. 132,303, and in Germany August 29, 1925.
This invention relates to the airtight closing of vessels, more particularly-of those used as preserve or jam jars, in which it is usual to provide a flanged face surrounding the 5 mouth of the vessel, on which face is placed a flat elastic ring with which the lid or cover makes a tight joint.
In order to insure a reliable tight joint, it is necessary, in the usual constructions, to grind both the face of the vessel on which the packing ring is placed and the face of the lid which'engages with the packing ring, as the unevenness of the surfaces 'occuring in the normal manufacture is too great to enable a reliable joint to be insured without subsequent treatment. Moreover, in the usual vessel and lid constructions, the ground faces utilized for the joint are very liable to be damaged, more'particularly when the vessel is being opened.
, According to the present invention the disadvantages in question are eliminated by retaining the flat rubber ring placed on an annular face of the vessel and by eflecting the tight joint between the vessel and the lid by means of a face of the lid which is slightly tapered. It has been found that by utilizing more particularly the outer edge of the flat rubber ring, an excellent joint is obtained, without it being necessary to'grind even one of the two faces which engage from the op.-
\ posite sides with the rubber ring.
More particularly good results are obtained when the slightly tapered pressure face .of the lid projects beyond the outer ed e of the packing ringand terminates in a ownward flange which forms an effieient protection for the packing face and may be used as a grip for openin thelid if the vessel be suitably constructe An embodiment of a preserve jar with the closing device according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The jar is marked 1 and the lid 2. 3 is the bearing face surrounding the opening of the vessel and intended for the flat rubber ring 4 with-the outer edge of the ring 4. When the lid is tightened and there is a vacuum in the interiorof the jar, the edge portion of; the ring is preferably compressed. 7 1s a pro]ect ing portion of the vessel which is so arrang 5 as shown in the drawing has a slightly tainsertion of opening tools.
'lhe opening of the vessel may be effected in a simple manner by introducing a tool sub-' stantially radially to the vessel between the projecting portion 7 of the Vessel and the flange 6 of the lid, and by using it as a lever swinging the outer lever arm upwardly. This requires the provision of bearing surfaces for the tool one at the inner end of the projecting portion 7 of the vessel and the other at the outer edge of downward flange '6 in substantially lateral displacement with relation to each other so that on'upward swinging of a tool radially disposed to the jar the inner end of same presses the jar downwardly and the middle portion bearing against the free edge of downward flange 6 push es the lid upwardly. Even on forcefully pushing the lid upwardly no tilting effect is exercised on the jar and nodamaging effect neither on the surfaces of the jar and of the lid bearing against surfaces of the rubber ring nor on the rubber ring itself.
In place of the annular flanges or projecting portions 6 and 7 may be 7 provided also single projections, in which case, of course care must'be taken to see that when the lid is put on, they are exactly above one another.
The projecting portions of the jar and the lidforming the slot for introducing an 0 ening tool should be so shaped that the sur aces forming the slot are either both substantially perpendicular to the axis of the jar or that the surface of the jar is perpendicular to the axis and that of the cover inclined in conformity with the wall of an upright cone so that the tool can be firmly positioned with its point on the surface of the jarand that a good opening leverage is secured. 7 What I claim is r s The combination with a jarmade of glass or the like having a flat annular surface on its outside near its mouth and a flat annular resilient gasket contacting with said surface,
ed of a cover made of glass or thelike having a slightly inclined inner annular surface opposed to said fiat outer surface of the jar, the two opposed annular surfaces adapted to effeet coin ression of said gasket increasing 5 from inside to outside of the gasket, the cover being provided with a flange projecting downward from the outer edge of said slight- 1y inclined inner annular surface, the vessel provlded wlth asecond annular surface opposed to and spaced from the lower face of 10 ADOLF SCHILLER.
