IMPROVEMENT IN FSTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS 4OF SASHES.

To all whom t1, may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS K. BREoKEN` RIDGE, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for the Meeting-Rails of Sashes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,.ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device detached from a window and unlocked. Fig. 2 is a like View of the same in place and locked. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of the lower side of said device, showing the locking-bar in its different positions, and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the different parts of my device separated from each other.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to increase the safety and efficiency of devices employed for locking together the meeting-rails of windowsash; and it consists, principally, in combining, with a horizontally-swim ging arm, which is pivoted upon a base-plate attached to thelower sash, and engages with a striking-plate attached to the upper sash, a locking-bolt, that automatically engages with said striking-plate and locks said swinging arm in engagement therewith, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in combining, with a horizontally-swinging arm that is pivoted upon a base-plate attached to the lower sash, and engages with a strikingplate attached to the upper sash, a locking-bolt that engages with said striking-plate and, by means of a stud, with suitable recesses within said base-plate, and locks said swinging arm in position when opened and closed, substantially as and for the purpose shown. It consists, finally, in the peculiar construction of the spring, and its combination with the swinging arm and locking-bolt, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the base-plate of my device, constructed with the form shown in Fig. 6, and provided with a central stud, B, that extends vertically upward. Pivoted upon the stud B is asweep, e
which, as seen in Fig. 5, consists ofa holiowhub or housing, C, that incloses said stud and extends betweenits headb and the base-plateA, and an arm, c, which extends horizontally outward from one side of said hub, and, has the form,in plan view, 0f a hook. Passing horizontally through the walls of the hub G is a recess, c', which is open at its lower side and receives a bolt, D, that has the form shown in Fig. 5, and loosely lills said recess laterally and vertically.` The portion dbf the bolt D" that is contained within the central portion ot'\\ when said bolt is moved forward to its farthest limit, projects about one-half the distance across the space withinsaid hook. The lower side fotlthecentral portion (l of the bolt D is recessed out, and within such recess, around the stud B, is coiled a spring, E, the ends of which project laterally outward, and are contained within transverse notches w w, that are formed within the lower side of said part d. Said spring is so arranged as to press said bolt in aforward inward direction. Upon the lower side of the bolt D, at or near the outer edge of its enlarged center d, is a stud, olf, which extends downward into au opening, a, that is formed within the base-plate A, and has such length as to permit said bolt and the sweep C `c to be turned one-fourth of a revolution upon or around the stud B. The inner side of the opening a is provided at its ends with two semicircular recesses, a and a", within one of which'the stud ol" is contained whenever the sweep is at either limit of its motion, the effect of such arrangement being to lock the latter in position, except when the bolt D and said stud d" are drawn outward, or suffi- V2 Nomina with a vertical bar, f, that extends between its upper and lower portions, and around which the hookedv -arm c of the' sweep passes" when it is desired'to lock the sash together. The device, which is now complete, is oper-I ated by tirst pulling outward upon the bolt, so
vas to release the-same from engagement with thebase and striking-plates, and then using said bolt as a means for swinging" the sweep to the'desired position, after which,'hy releasing said bolt, it will automatically lock said parts in place. y

3. In combination with the central portion d of the bolt D, and with the stud B, the spring E, encircling said stud, having its ends contained within the transverse notches x x ot' said part d, and operating to move said bolt longitudinally, substantially as and'for the purpose set forth.
