UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BABOOGK, OF HOMER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BLOTTERS AND PAPER-WEIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,043, dated November 16, 1875; application filed September 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. H. BABGOGK, of Homer, Cortland county, New York, have invented certain Improvements relating to a Combined Blotter and Paper-Weight, of which the following is a specification:
of considerable diameter, and held by a wedgeor key, so it may be readily removed and exchanged when required. The cylinder revolves freely on a shaft, one end of which protrudes beyond the end of the cylinder, and is adapted to serve as a handle.
The accompanying drawing represents what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View when in use as a blotter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, representing the device in use as a paper-weight. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the cylinder.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A is the body of the cylinder, formed of hard wood or other suitable material, the ends be ing deeply recessed, as shown. A deep groove, a, extends longitudinally along the cylinder, of the form shown in Fig. 3, being wider at its It terminates in a considerable cavity, a. B is a handle or left clear to adapt it to press fairly upon the paper on which it may be placed in an upright position. a
A single sheet of blotting-paper is represented by d. Two or more sheets may be superposed and similarly applied, if preferred. Whether one or more sheets are used, the size of the paper should be carefully adaptedto the size of the cylinder a, so that when wound tightly around, and its ends thrust into the groove a, it may be secured by a wedge-key, m.
Various elaborate devices may be used to facilitate the removing and replacing of this key m; but 1 have found no ditficulty in practice with the use of a simple wedge form. A
When the device is placed upright its lower end bears fairly on the paper, while the handle stands in a convenient position above to allow the device to be grasped and used as a blotter, and again returned instantly to its use as a paper-weight. I
I claim as my invention- 1; The key m, adapted to enter the slot at from the inside and hold by friction, as described, in combination with the cylinder A,
the grooves a a, and the blotting-paper d, as
specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the paper-weight and blotter described, consisting of the cylinder A, carrying the attached blotting-paper d, and the loose shaft or handle B, projecting at one end only, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of September, 1875, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WlLLIAM H. BABG OOK.
