Description
L. W. LA'THRQP & T. A. WEBER.
COMPOUND FOR LINING FOR MACHINE-BEARINGS. No. 170,000. Patented Nov. 16,1875.
I wnmasses: mvsuT as. W g $3 M ZZQ%W N PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMEH, WASHINGTON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE LEBBEUS W. LATHROP AND THEODORE A. WEBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR LINING FOR MACHINE-BEARINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,000, dated November 16, 1875; application filed November 2, 1875.
CASE B.
- specification Our improved lining for machinery bearings consists of a compound of aplg al glue and graphite, with or without a sheet of cloth, leather, or other like thin flexible substance, the glue being dissolved in boiling water and mixed with the graphite in about equal proportions by weight, and the mixtu e being spread out while hot by a rotary or other brush, in thin layers or sheets on the cloth or other sheet, or on a flat plate of metal or other substance, and allowed to dry.
The cloth or other like flexible substance will generally be employed to make a stronger I article for handling, without tearing apart,
but its use is not so essential after the lining has been fitted in the bearing, as it is not generally subject to much tensile strain when fitted in position.
The drawing represents our improved lining for machinery bearings in plan and sections, the latter views showing itwith and Without the cloth backing.
A represents the cloth or leather backing, and B the coating of graphite and animal glue.
Thisimproved lining is of great utility as an anti-frictional agent, and can be applied by simple and cheap means.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a lining for machinery bearings, consisting of a compound of animal glue and graphite, with or without a backing of cloth, leather, or other equivalent substance, substantially as specified.
LEBBEUS W. LATHROP. THEODORE A. WEBER.
