Description

B. s. BRYANT.
Mode of Liningi Boots and Shoes.
Patented Feb.13,1872.
/N VENTOR AM. Hora-umscmfmc co. m.' f assos/fri fnacrssy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRADLEY S. BRYANT, OF HAN SON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MODES OFl LINING BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,674, dated February 13, 1872.
To allpersons to whom these presents shall come:
Be it known that I, BRADLEY S. BRYANT, of Hanson, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mode of Lining Boots and Shoes 5 and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawing. As is Well known, the inside of boots and shoes, for a iinish, is lined with either leather or cotton-cloth. The object of this invention is to provide a substitute for the lining heretofore used 5 and the invention consists in lining a boot and shoe with a Hock of wool, hair, cotton, silk, or other suitable material, by cementing and applying the same either` directly to the inner surface of the leather of which a boot or shoe is made, or by and through the interposition of paper or other sheet material secured to the inner face of the leather.
In the accompanying plate of drawing, my
improvement in mode of lining boots and shoes is illustrated, Fi'gure 1 being a partial vertical section and elevation of a shoe in the direction of its length; and Fig. 2, a transverse section in plane of line a.' a', Fig. l.
-flock is secured thereon by cement applied to the said surface of the paper, over which the flock is then'thrown, the drying 0f the cement rmly adhering the flock to the paper. application of paper to the inside of a shoe, as above described, the paper it is best to have previously prepared with flock; and, as is obvious, the paper is cut up into the proper shapes for the different parts of the inside of a shoe, so that it can be laid smoothly and evenly thereon. The paper may be dispensed with, and the iiock applied and secured by cement, as aforesaid, directly to the inner surface of the shoe, and in lieu of .paper other sheet material may be used but paper is preferable, as it has strength and is cheap, and when iiocked has all the appearance of a felt or cloth. There are various well-known cement-s which may be employed, but it is preferable to use a cement that is Water and sweat proof. It is obvious that by the improved mode of lining a boot or shoe herein described a finish is made which not only has all the neatness of appearance desired, but has also durability and firmness, while at the same time it is exceedingly cheap as to expense of material and labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved mode of lining boots and shoes herein described-that is, by surfacing with a flock. of wool or cotton, &c., substantially as described.
