VALVE-SPRING COMPRESSGE."
Application filed December 20, 1926. Serial No. 158,084.
This invention relates to valve spring compressing tools and forms a continuation'in part of my application for Patent Ser. No. 71,347, filed November 25, 1925, and has for one of its objects to produce a compressing tool which simultaneously engages the head of the valve and the spring to prevent upward movement of the valve when force is exerted to compress the spring.
Another object is to produce a tool of the character outlined which is of adjustable nature and may be utilized on practically all engines of the poppet valve type and by means of which the operator may mamtain a sprlng compressed with one hand while he pulls the sprin retaining pin with his other hand.
A further object is to provide a valve spring compressor which is of simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool in operative relation to a valve, the compressed position of the spring being shown by dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the tool.
Figure 8 is a section on the line III-III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a reduced edge view of the tool.
Figure 5 is a broken sectional view of a tool of slightly modified character.
Figure 6 is a section on the line VI--VI of Figure 1.
In the said drawing, where like reference characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, 1 indicates a valve head, 2
the valve stem, 3 the spring for closing the valve, and 4 the customary recessed washer on which the end of the spring rests, said washer being held in position by a pin (not shown) within the recess of the washer.
The tool of the invention comprises a relatively L-shaped valve member 5 adapted to engage the valve head 1 at one of its ends, and secured to the other end of said'valve engaging member or formed integrally there- I with is a guide spaced from the valve memher, said parts beingsecured in the device as illustrated by providing the guide with a pair of ears 8 adapted to be engaged in notches in the side edges of the member 5 as shown by the drawing.
V Slidingly received between the member 5 be substituted according to the valve mecha- The member 5 is formed at a point above the guide 7 with a laterally projecting ear 12 bent as at 18 to alinement with the sliding member 10, and pivoted to said ear is an operating lever 14 having its end bent as at15 I to accommodate an element or link 16 connected at one end to the lever 14 and at its other end to a bolt 17 which is inserted in position in the member 10 by being passed through an opening 17 in the member 5 and having its head received within a countersunk portion around each of a series of ad-. justing holes 18formed in the end of the sliding member 10, I
It will be apparent that by choosing the proper adjusting holes 18 in the sliding member 10, the operator can readilyaccommodate the tool to engines of greatly varying proportions, and that after the ends of the tool have been engaged with the valve parts, downward pressure on the lever 14 will effect compression of the valve spring 3. When compressed, the operator can maintain the position of the spring with one hand while he uses the other hand in withdrawing the; valve pin (not shown). I 1
In the device as illustrated in Figure 5, no method of adjusting the tool to different engines is provided other than the very limited degree of radial movement of the operating lever. In said figure, the valve head engaging member 19 1s tubular and the valve spring engaging member 20 slides therewithin, being connected to the operat- Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A valve spring compressor comprising a valve engaging member having at one end a guide and. being formed intermediate its ends with a laterally projecting ear, a spring engaging member slidingly received at one end in the guide of the first member, a lever pivoted to said projecting ear, and an element connecting said lever and spring engaging member.
2. A spring compressor comprising a valve engaging member having at one end a guide and being formed intermediate its ends with a laterally projecting ear, a spring engaging HENRY W. iiononrnnnn,
