This invention relates to a device for litting the valve spring of an internal combustion engine to iacilitatethe removal ofthe valve, and has for its principal object the provision of a device of this character which will be economical to manufacture, el'licient in operation and which will contain'adjustments by. means ot which it may be readily adapted to various types and sizes of engines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device o'lthis character in which, when desired, an, increasedleverage may he obtained without it being necessary to build the device oi an awkward length.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and elticiency. These will become more apparent from the iollowing description.

Devices have been manufactured somewhat along the lines of thev present invention, but these devices were applicable to only a single type `of engine so that a repair shop was required to carry a number of different devices so as to be 'prepared for any type oi' engine. The present invention, however, is designed so that it may be employed with any of the usual types and sizes `ot engines.
The invention comprises an inverted U- shaped ulcrum in which a .U-shaped lealterna'te form ver arm 11 is supported. Each extremity otthe lever arm 11 vis pivotally secured to` a V spring cup 12. Slidably mounted at the opposite end of the lever 11 is a U-shaped eX- tension 13. Removalot the extension 13 is prevented by means of a pin 141L carried by the lever 11 which travels in a slot 15 formed in the extension 13. The extension 15 1s provided with hooked-shaped projections 16 which engage the lever 11 andco-act with the pin 111 to maintain the extension in align-` ment with the lever. Normally, Vthe extension occupies the positionoi Fig. 1, but when the device is being used to litt an unusually stitf valve spring, it is drawn outset the position ot Fig. 1 to ythat oi? Fig. 2 and acts to increase the leverage of the device.
In operation, the ulcrum 10 is Vrested upon the cylinder casting 17 ofthe engine, an arcuateindentation V27 being formed in the lfulcrum to surround the valve guide l18y thereof. The spring cup 12 is slipped under the valve spring, illustrated at 19, there being a slot 20 in its bottom for the reception of the valve stem,A illustrated at 21. The de vice is now in the position otFig. 1.
By depressing the iree extremity of the lever11, to the position of Fig. 2, the valve spring will ybe compressed as illustrated in that view. rlhis allows tree access to the valve spring pin, 22, so that the valve, illustrated at 28, may be readily removed.
In different types of engines, the valve guides 18 are et diierent length 'so that the resting place of the ulcrum will be at different heights from the lower extremity of the valve spring 19. 'lo adapt the device to these various conditions, I form a series of pivot rests 211 in the tulcrum 10 adapted to receive the pivot pin of the `lever 11.,
This allows ready adjustment of the device to suit various heights of valve guides. 1n
adjusting the device, it is placed in the position ot Fig. 1, the 'ulcrum 10 is then held with one hand and the lever 11 in the other hand, until the pivot pin 25 rests in the` pivot rest 211 ot the proper height. The lever 11 is then depressed and the spring compressed. Viith this arrangement, it is not necessary to perform any extra operations in adjusting the device since the adjustment is made simultaneously with the operation thereof.
To accommodate valve springs of various diameters, I yform thevalve cup in two similar sections, 29 and 30. Each section being carried upon loneo'` the extremities ot the lever 11.
The lever 11 isV ot spring mate-- lou rial and its elasticity serves to maintain the f two sections 29 and 30V normally together. They may be lspread apart however, when desired, to accommodate a valve spring of relatively large diameter.;A The ulcrum lO is also of spring material so that 1t will maintain itself snugly against the. lever 1l.
By forming these parts of Spring mtala lugs 3l and 32 are formed upon the parts 2 9 -and 30 respectively, to carry an adjusting screw which may be employed to maintain the two parts of the spring` cup at the desired separation.
vWhile a specificform of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein; it is desired to be understood -that the same nay he varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing 'from the spirit of the invention.

A valve spring compressor comprising two semi-cylindrical cups adapted to engage opposite sides of a valve spring; a` bottom in each of said cups adapted to engage the bottom of a valve spring; a U-shaped lever pivoted at one of its extremities to one of said cups and at its other extremity to the other of said cups; a U-shaped extension :adapted to partially Surround and slide on said lever; and a U-shaped ulcrum for said lever.
2. A valve spring` compressor comprising a lever; a piece ofsheet metal 1cent to partially surround said lever; and a hand rest formed on said sheet metal, said sheet metal being slidable on said lever to form an e3;- tension thereof. K
