Application filed March 10, 1921. Serial No. 451,260.
1 all w how; it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PATERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVillamina, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring Compressors, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to devices for compressing the valve springs used 011 internal combustion engines so that the cross pins can be removed from or replaced in the valve stems. This device is used in taking out and replacing the valves; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 isa side view of a valve spring compressor constructed according to this invention, and showing it applied to a valve spring. Fig. 2 is an end view of the compressor. ,1
The valve 4L is provided with a stem 5', and is held to its seat 6 by a spring 7. The spring encircles the valve stem, and is arranged between the valve seat and a washer 8, on the valve stem, which is held in place by a cross pin 9. These parts are of any approved construction.
The compressor is provided with a lower rod 10 having a curved lower end portion which terminates in a forked jaw 12 or other means for engaging with the spring 7 A guide block 14: is secured to the upper end portion of the rod 10, and 15 is a sleeve which is slidable longitudinally in the guide block, and which has a longitudinal slot in one side. An upper rod 18 is arranged in the sleeve 15, and it has a pin 19 on one side which engages with the slot 16, and thereby prevents the rod from revolving in the sleeve, but permits it to he slid longitudinally. The lower end portion 20 of the rod 18 is screwthreaded, and is provided with an adjusting 'nut 21 .which bears against the lower end of the sleeve.
The upper end portion 22 of the rod 18 is curved, and is provided with a screwthreaded head 24:. A screw. 25 works in the head 24, andis arranged over the jaw 12, and 26 is a head on the screw for bear ing on top of the valve. This screw is provided for adjusting purposes, and it is made of suiiicient length to project through a hole in the top of the valve chamber when that is the only way it can be applied to the valve.
The screw can be screwed up and shortened when the valve chamber is removable.
An operating lever 30 is pivoted by a pin 31 to a lug 32 on the upper end portion or the sleeve 15, and is provided with a stop 33 for engaging with the rod 18 and thereby limiting the upward movement of the lever. Toggle links 84 are pivoted by a pin 35 at one end to the'lever 30. The other end portions of the toggle links are pivoted by a pin 36 to a lug '37 on the guide block 14. The lug 37 is arranged on. the other side of the guide block and sleeve from the lug 32, and the links are suitably shaped to clear the guide block, and are arranged one on each side of the sleeve.
When the device has been adjusted to a valve and its stem, as shown in Fig. 1, the lever 30 is moved upwardly until the stop strikes the rod 18. This raises the guide block on the sleeve, and compresses the valve spring, and the toggle links then hold the device locked with the spring in its compressed position. The retaining pin can then be removed from or replaced in the valve stem. The screwthreaded portion 20 of the rod 18, and the nut 21, enables the device to be adjusted to suit the valves of different makes of engines.
What I claim is:
1. A valve spring compressor, comprising a rod provided with a guide, a sleeve slidable in the said guide, a rod adjustable longitudinally in the said sleeve, said rods being provided with means for engaging with the spring and valve, and means for sliding the said sleeve and holding it stationary in the guide so as to compress the valve spring. 2. In a valve spring compressor, a rod provided with a guide, a sleeve slidalole in the said guide, a screwthreaded rod slidable longitudinally in the guide and provided with means which prevent it from revolving, a nut screwed on the screwthreaded rod and bearing against the said sleeve and affording a means for adjusting the rod in the guide, said rods being provided with means for engaging the spring and valve, and means for sliding the said sleeve and holding itstationary in the guide so as to compress the valve spring.
3. A. valve spring compressor, comprising a lower rod provided with a guide, a sleeve slidable in the said guide, an upper rod connected with the said sleeve, said rods being provided with meansfor engaging with the g r t 1,438782 springand valve, a lever pivoted. to the said nut screwed on the said lower end portion sleeve, and toggle links pivotally connecting and bearing against the lower-1 end of the the said lever with the said guide. I sleeve, said rods being provided with means 4. A valve spring compressor, comprising for engaging with the spring and valve, a 5 a lower rod providedwith a guideyasleeve "lever pivotedio thesaid sleeve, and toggle slidable in the said guide and .having .a links pivotally connecting the said lever longitudinal slot, an upper rod slidable in with the said guide. a
the sleeve and having a -guide" pin-which-en I In testimony whereof I have affixedmy gages with the slot and having also a screw signature.
