VALVE-LIFTER.

7 '0 all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT J. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Oceanside, in the county of San Diego, tate of California, have invented a new and useful Valve-Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The-invention relates to valve lifters and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a U-shaped member having its lower end provided with a foot adapted to engage under the washer of the coiled spring carried by the valve stem and provided with a vertically slidable bar, the lower end of which engages a valve. Also to provide a lever whereby the slidable member may be moved in a vertical plane downwardly for compressing the spring.
A further object is to provide a handle member provided with a pivoted dogwhich is spring actuated and which dog cooperates with ratchet teeth on the vertical slidable member and forms means for holding the vertical slidable member in any position to which it may have been moved thereby holding the valve spring in compressed position.
A further object is to provide the lower end of the U-shaped member with spring arms, which normally spring apart, said arms being provided-with horizontally disposed flanges forengaging under the valve stem washer, the spring arms allowing of the reception of various sizes of valve stems therebetween. Also to provide a slidable collar on the lower end of the U-shaped member so that the spring arms may be forced toward each other, and into close engagement to each other.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a Ushaped frame, the lower end of which frame is bifurcated as at 2 so as to form spring arms 3 which normally are sprung apart. The outer ends of the spring arms 3 are provided with horizontal portions 4, the adjacent edges of which are provided with recesses 5, which recesses receive the valve stem 6, when the valve lifter is in position. After the spring arms 3 have been properly positioned the collar 7 may be moved outwardly over the same so that they will be contracted into engagement with the Valve stem so that they will be prevented from displacement. The recesses 5 are shallow so that the pin 8 which is disposed beneath the washer 9 will pass between the spring arms 3 when the U-shaped member is forced upwardly by the mechanism hereinafter set forth. Washer 9 engages the upper edges of the spring arms 3 and when forced upwardly contracts the coiled spring 10 which is interposed between the washer 9 and the engine casing 11. U-shaped memher 1 has its horizontal arm 12 provided with a vertically disposed guide arm 13 and slidably mounted in bearings 14 of the arm 12 in the right angled arm 15 is a vertically movable bar 16, the lower end of which bar is preferably pointed and adapted to engage i in the valve 16 carried by the valve stem 10.
Valve 16 is normally held in engagement with the valve seat by means of the coiled spring 10. Extending upwardly from the horizontal arm 15 is a handle member 18, which member is adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator so that the device as a whole may be steadied when the slidable bar 16 is being forced downwardly by the operating lever 19, which lever is bifurcated and has its arms pivotally connected as at 20 to the slidable bar 16, said lever being pivotally connected as at 21 to the upper end of a rockable link 22. Link 22 is bifurcated at its lower end and is pivotally connected as at 23 at its lower end to the horizontal arm 12. It will be seen that when the lever 19 is moved upwardly in the direction of the arrow (1 shown in Fig. 1 that the vertical slidsembled for grinding the valve seat or for 1 any other purpose. U-shaped frame 1, as it moves upwardly causes the arm 15 to also move upwardly and to hold the frame in any upward position to which it may have been moved, a pivoted pawl 24 is provided, which pawl is pivotallymounted as at 25 in an aperture of the arm 15. The nose 26 of the pawl 24 ratchets over a series of ratchet teeth 27 carried on one edge of the slidable bar 16. The upward movement of the U-shaped member 1 being against the action of the coiled valve spring 10, it will be seen that the pivoted pawl 24 will hold the frame in any position to which it may be moved. Pawl 24 is normally held with its nose 26 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 27 by means of a coiled spring 28. Pivotally mounted on the handle 18 as at 29 is a hand grip member 30, which grip member has its finger engaging portion 31 disposed adjacent the handle so that it is withineasy reach of the operator at all times. The upper end 32 of the pawl 24 is disposed .in a bifurcation of the member 30 and is adapted to be engaged by pins 33 which pass through the arms of the bifurcation and form means for engaging the pawl end 32 for forcing the nose 26 into and out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 27.
From the above it will be seen that a valve spring compressing device is provided which device is so constructed that the lower end of the U-shaped member which engages the valve stem will be guided in its upward movement and prevented from displacement and accidental releaseof the valve spring after the same has been compressed. It will also be seen that an auxiliary handle is provided which may be grasped by the operator for steadying a device when the lever 17.
is being forced upwardly thereby additionally assuring the tool as a whole against displacement. By providing a spring actuated dog 24, the valve stem spring will be held automatically in any position to which it may have been moved upon releaseof the operating lever 19.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A valve spring compressor and holding device comprising a U-shaped member, the lower end of said Ushaped member being provided with a bifurcated horizontal portion, the arms of said bifurcated portion being spring arms and normally sprung out, a slidable collar slidably mounted on the lower end of the U-shaped member and adapted to be forced over the spring arms for forcing the same toward each other, fiangescarried by the spring arms and provided with recesses 1 adapted to receive opposite s1des of the valve stem, a vertically disposed arm carried by the upper horizontal arm of the U-shaped member and spaced from the end thereof, a bearing in the end of the upper horizontal member of the U-shaped member, a bearing carried by an arm at the upper end of the vertically disposed member carried by the upper arm of the U-shaped member, a vertically slidable valve engaging bar slidable in said bearing, a lever carried by the U- shaped member for moving the slidable bar vertically, a handle member for steadying the valve spring lifter as a whole and a spring actuated detent for holding the vertically slidable' bar in any position to which it may be moved, and also forming means for holding the valve spring in compressed condition. v U
