j/welifar UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ALBERT A. OARTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KlTCHEN-SHELVES.
Specificatidn forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,892, dated November 16, 1875; application filed October 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT A. CARTER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Kitchen Use; and do hereby declare the following to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and letters of reference marked thereon, to enable persons skilled in the arts to make and use the said invention.
The nature of my invention consists in making a shelf folding with hinges, to place it either perpendicularly to a wall, preferably overasink, or capable of being held in a horizontal position by a diagonal brace, and bearin g a separate shelf, hinged by links, provided with stop-pins, so as to form an upper horizontal shelf, and one of the links is so made asto answer the purpose of a knil'e'sharpener. The lower shelf is grooved, so as to safely support and efiicicntly drain dishes when being washed, and the upper shelf isuseful to support dishes when dried. The upper shelf can be reversed, so as to stand in an oblique position, and is provided on its reverse side with suitable projections to hold a grater, as shown in Fig. 3. we
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the invention when closed and in horizontal position; Fig, 2, a perspective view of it open, and arranged to drain dishes and sharpen knives; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of it adjusted to hold a grater.
A represents a shelf, with hinges B B to hold it to the'wall, and with a diagonal brace, G,
to support it when in ahorizontal position. D is an upper shelf, secured by links E and F to the shelf A. The linksE and F and shelves A and D are perforated, and fitted with pins G and H to hold them in position, as shown in Fig. 2. l The shelf A is grooved, so as to hold the lower edges of dishes, and to conupon which are fitted corresponding lugs K on a grater, L, which, when-the pin G is Withdrawn, can be brought in a diagonal position, as shown in Fig. 3, and serves as a convenient support to the grater, and permits a vessel to receive the grated material, being easily placed on the shelf A.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure as such by Letters Patent, is-
l. The shelvesA and D, provided with hinges B B, and links E and F, and pins G and H, constructed as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The link E, with a beveled edge, combined with the shelves A and D, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The reversible shelf D, provided. with studs adapted to hold a grater, as set forth and described.
ALBERT A. CARTER.
