Description

v 010. CAMPBELL.
REVERSIBLE BROILER.
No. 347,992. Patented Aug. 24, 1886.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER C. CAMPBELL, OF CHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
REVERSIBLE BROILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 347,992, dated August 24, II 886.
Application filed November ill), 1885. Serial No. 184,2l6. (No model.)
T0 alt 1072 0112, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER O. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reversible Broilers, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionis an improvement in reversible broilers, the object being to provide an improved construction for this class of culi nary utensils, whereby the broiler proper is made reversible by rotating it on the handle thereof, and the handle constructed to support the broiler under the covers of a stove.
In the drawing forming part of this specification is illustrated in a perspective view in an open position a reversible broiler constructed according to my invention.
In the drawing, A is the handle of the broiler, having an extension, 0, which is in a plane substantially parallel to that of said handle, but to one side of that of the latter, the said extension and handle being united by the inclined portion Z).
The broiler-frai'nes d and c are constructed, preferably, ofwoven wire, though they may be made of cast-iron, and are hinged together at v o, a loop, 0, being provided on the frame d for locking it, when shut, against frame 6, as hereinafter described. In bending the border-wire ofsaid frame 0 a ring, 2, and a ring, zone at each end of said frameare formed in said border-wire, of a diameter slightly less than that of the extension 0 of the handle, so that when the said extension is putinto said rings in the position shown the latter will clamp the part c more or less, thereby forming a frictional resistance, which causes the broiler-frames unitedly to rest in any position on said extension to which they may be turned, but which is not too great to permit of their conveniently easy rotation. A head is formed in any convenient manner on the end of the extension 0, and when the frame (I is shut against the frame e the loop 0 is swung over the end of said extension back of said head, thereby locking said frames together, to hold safely any article that may be put between them to be broiled.
When the frames (1 and e are locked together for use, as above set forth, they are rotated from time to time on the extension of the handie, to bring first one side and then the other toward the fire, the handle A being held meanwhile in thesame position. The inclined portion 1) between the handle A and the extension 0 provides for holding the handle at a convenient distance above the top of a stove, while the frames (1 and c, with their contents, are held at a much lower level over the tire in the stove below the covers, the diameter or thickness of. the part I) being so ineonsiderable that, if desired, the said 8 covers can be placed upon theholes in the top of the stove, and so nearly close said holes while the broiler is in the stove as to prevent nearly, ifnotall, smoke from escaping during the operation of broiling. \Vhen the frame d is turned back, as in the drawing, it rests against the inclined portion 1) of the handle.
What I claim as my invention is The reversible broiler described, consisting of two rectangular frames, (1 and c, hinged together at the end from which the handle projects, the handle having an inclined portion, 1), and an extension, 0, to which the frameeis swiveled by friction-elasps,said extension projecting beyond the end of said frame opposite the hinge, and a loop, 0, at the end of frame d, in position to clasp over said extension 0 when the broiler is closed, substantially as described.
