An object of the invention comprehends means for rigidly engaging the files to prevent displacement.

Another object of the invention contemplates a weight member normally engaging the index portions of the files.

More specifically stated the holder is rotatably mounted to expose the files for eifective use.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction to be hereinafter more fully. described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims. a

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on suspended upon a Wall or other surface. An

elongated box-like housing 11 is mounted for rotatable movement in a plane parallel to the base plate upon a central pivot pin 12 carried by the plate 10. The front and lower end of the housing is open, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. A shaft 13 is extended through the side walls of the housing and through ears 14 depending from a portion of the housing upon the front thereof. U- shaped members 15 of wire having the respective ends thereof looped upon the shaft also have the inner sides thereof disposed in spaced relation for positioning a common operating lever 16 therebetween. Spring members 17 encircle appropriate portions of the shaft 13 and have the extremities thereof abutting the forward side of the housing and the outer side arms of the U-shaped members 15 to normally tension the latter inwardly toward the back of the housing.

The side walls of the housing are provided with slots 18 extending from the outer edges thereof toward the back wall of the housing. A bar member 19 is extended through the slots 18 and provided with weight members 20 upon the extremities thereof and upon the PArEur tries-. 'i

In the use and operation of the invention the housing is rotated upon the pivot bolt 12 to occupy an inverted position with respect to that illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. In such position the bar 19 will drop back through the slots 18 and away from the back of the housing. The handle member 16 is then pulled outwardly to raise the U-- shaped members 15 and to engage portions thereof with inwardly pressed portions 21 in the side walls to hold the same open against the tension of the springs 17. In such position files and other matter to be indexed will be inserted within the housing. This accomplished, the U-shaped members 15 are released from'the portions 21 by the lever 16 to engage the lower portions of the files. 9 The housing is then reversedand the bar 19 will drop to the position as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing to engage the opposed end of the files. Reference may be had to the files by reversing the position of the housing; the bar 19 Will of its own weight drop back through the slots 18 and free of the adjacent ends of the files. The index portions of the files will thus be released to afiord effective use thereof. Anyone or a plurality of'files'may be extracted from a holder, when the U- shaped members 15 are released, independently of adjacent files. i

Theginvention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herei in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A file holder comprising a base plate, a housing mounted for rotation thereon, U- shaped members movably mounted within the housing for engaging the files, an operating handle included upon-the U-shaped members, said housing being provided with slots'in the side walls thereof, and a weight-operated, member slidably mounted within the slots being adapted for engagement with the files.
