Description
[UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON L. MELHORN, OF HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
\ IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 169,826, dated November 9, 1875; application filed october 4, 1815.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, SIMON L. MELHORN, of Hanover, in the county of York and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Desk Joints; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication.
The nature of my invention consists in the attachment and construction of a seat-arm for school-desks, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective view; and Fig. 2 a section through the line :c m. y
In the gures, A represents the leg ot' the school-desk, which may be madein any ofthe well-kn own and usual Ways. B represents a meta1 plate, which is provided on its inner face With two lugs or pins, a a. These pins enter the leg A, as seen, and then a screw or bolt, d, serves to secure the plate /rmly to the leg. The outer end of thev plate B has a bolthole made through it from one side to the other. Around this hole, for a portion of its length, is formed a socket, and around this socket is formed a collar, as seen from w to m.
C represents the seat-arm, the inner end of which has a barrel formed upon its side, which is made rounding to fit the socket in the end of the plate. The end is also formed so that it will fit snugly within the collar. A bolt binds the two parts together. l
When the seat-arm is raised to a vertical position it strikes against the upper end of the collar; but When in a horizontal position it rests upon the lower side or end of said collar.
The inode of attaching the plate to the leg issimple and cheap, and the Inode of securing the seat-arm is not only cheap and simple, but substantial and strong.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The plate B, having at its outerend a ceiltral socket and a quadrantal recess open at the top, as described, in combination with the seat-arln havinga barrel upon its side to tit the socket of saidplate, the two being confined together by a bolt, as is herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto-set my hand this 22d day of September, 1875.
SIMON L. MELHORN. Witnesses:
FREMONT ELY, WiLLIAM J. OFLAHERTY.
