Description
J. G. HUNT.
Gate Post. No. 16,978. Patented April 7, 1857.
GATE-POST ATTACHABLE TO- ANY PANEL OF ITS CORRESPONDING FIELD-FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,978, dated April 7, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. HUNT, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Gate- Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved portable gate post, and a section of the fence to which it is attached. Fig. 2 a view of the post, and Fig. 3 an end view of the section of fence.
Like letters represent like parts in the different views.
A represents the gate post, and B, B, B, arms passing into the center of the post, and secured to it in any suitable manner; C, the battens of the fence, and D, D, the bars of the fence; E, the brace which supports the fence.
The arms B, of the post A, are slipped in between the battens O, of the fence, and in the spaces between the bars D, D, the bars D, support the post by means of the arms B, and the bar D, which projects from the fence, passes into a slot in the post, thus aiding to support the post. The post being thus supported, and connected to the fence, by the arms B, and bars D, D, it is secured in place by pins, 00, passing through the arms B, upon the inner side of the battens C, the battens also aid in keeping it in place.
The gate may be placed upon the hooks F, or hinges may be attached to the post.
Another I is to be placed at the other side of the gate space, and attached to the fence in the same manner as the post A, and in, it is to be placed the catch, or other device for fastening the gate. This post A, may be attached to any horizontally barred fence.
It can be constructed at a small cost, and no labor is required in its erection, except to slip the arms B between the bars of the fence, after a section of the fence corresponding to the length of the gate to be hung has been removed.
The gate may be hung on hinges, hooks and eyes, or in any other desirable manner.
What I claim as new and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of a portable post, to a fence whether portable or permanent, when arranged substantially as described, for the purpose of hanging or fastening therein a gate, as before set forth.
J AS. Gr. HUNT.
