This invention relates to robe rails for vehicles and especially to a roberail designed to act as a receptacle for articles such as umbrellas, canes, fishing rods and the like.

More particularly the invention relates to a combined robe rail and umbrella casing.

One important object of the invention is to provide an improved device in the form of 1 a tubular robe rail having end closures one, at least, of which is removable to permit the robe rail to constitute a receptacle.

A second important object is to provide a receptacle like robe rail having a novel arrangement of closure at one end formed by the handle of an article such as an umbrella or the like.

With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of the rear side of an automobile seat showing the improved robe rail applied thereto.

Figure. 2 is a cross section through the improved robe rail and showing its attachment to the seat back.

v Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the robe rail showing an umbrella therein.

Figure 4 is an elevation of one end portion of the rail showing the manner of holding the handle forming the closure therein.

The improved robe rail is shown in the present drawings as consisting of a tubular body 10 to'which are secured spaced arms 11 pivotally connected to hinge plate 12 mounted in any suitable manner to a convenient portion of a vehicle such as the seat back S.

One end of the body is closed by a hollow terminal extension 13 preferably welded,

brazed or otherwise permanently fixed to the body although, in some instances, it may be found desirable to make this end detachable. The other end. of the rail has removably secured thereto a closure 14 which preferably forms the handle of an umbrella 15 or other like article, it being obvious that this closure 4 may carry a cane, fishing rod joint or any other similar device. 13 and 14 may be made as ornamental as desired and preferably conform in size and appearance so as not to detract from the appearance of the robe rail as a whole.

As a means of detachably securing the handle 14 in the end of the body 10 the latter is provided with a bayonet slot, 16 and a from and engage said slot.

In storing an umbrella in the rail it is first folded neatly and then the usuall'fabric case or bag is fitted over the fabric portion. It is then inserted in the rail and the pin 17 engaged in the bayonet slot. Thus the umbrella may be carried at all times in the vehicle ready for use incase of leaving the latter in a storm.

The tubular body 10 is provided with a series of perforations 10 which face downwardly, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing. These perforations permit air to enter the body and the contents there- 'of, but also permit any water on the umbrella to drain therethrough.

sired to confine the invention to the exact ner end, said handle corresponding in contour to the contour of the closure, said handle and member having coacting interengaging means for detachably connecting them. together, the said coacting means positioned in proximity to the inner end of the handle and at one end of said member, and said memher having its bottom formed with spaced openings.

2. In combination a one-piece, stationary supporting rail comprising a tubular body member open at each end and of uniformv diameter throughout, a pair of oppositely ex;

tending closures for the ends of said member, sald'closures extending into and -pro]ect1ng from the ends of said member, each of said closures gradually increasing in diameter from its inner to its outer end, one of said closures frictionally engaging with the inner face of said member for detachably securing such closure in position, and the other of said closures and said member having coacting meansfor detachably connecting them together, said coacting means positioned in close proximity to the inner end of the last mentioned closure and one end of the member, that closure frlctionally engaging with said ing rail comprising a tubular stationary, onepiece body member open at each end and of uniform diameter throughout and uninterrupted from end to end, a pair of oppositely extending closures for the ends of said memface of said member for detachably securing such closure in position, and the other of said closures and said member having coacting means for detachabl connecting them together, and said mem er provided at its bottom with spaced openings.
