applicati-on inea July a5,
T his invention relatesto an air pump,'the general object of the invention being to provide 'means whereby the pump can be used eitheras a double action pump or a single actioiifpump.
rihis invention also consists in certain other Jeatures of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafterl fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
in describing my invention in detail, referenc will be had to the accompanying drawf ings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view. Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of F igure l.
In these views l indicates the cylinder of the pump which has its upper end closed by a cap 2 which carries the gland 3 for the piston rod Ll. The inner end of the rod carries the two pistons 5 and 5, the piston 5 acting to compress the air in the cylinder on the up stroke of the pump and the piston 5 acting to compress the air on the down stroke. Ports 6 and 7 are formed in the cap 2 and a nipple 8 is screwed into the enlarged outer end of the port G, this nipple having a port 9 therein so that air can pass through the nipple and `the port 6 to the upper part of the cylinder on the down stroke of the piston. rlhe inner end of the nipple has a valve seat which is adapted to be engaged by the valve 10 which is forced upon the seat by the pressure of air created in the cylinder on the up stroke of the piston 5, this air passing through the port 7 into the coupling 11 to which is connected the tube 12 which leads the air to the point ot1V use. A ball valve 13, limited in its movement by a coil spring lll, prevents air being drawn through the port 7 on the down stroke of the piston 5.
Y An upright tube 15 has one end inserted in an opening in a. short tube/15 which is inserted in lan opening at the lower end of the cylinder. A port 16 is 'formed in the tube 15, adjacent- `its upper end, and the tube 15 has a valve seat in its inner end for a ball Y valve 17 and a spring 19 normally holds the.
valve on its seat, though said valve will move o its seat and permit air to enter the lower Apart' of the cylinder through the tubes 15 and 15 on the upward stroke of the piston 192?. sei-iai Np. ananas.l
5. The aircompresse'd in the lower part of the pipe 21 which has vits upper end connectedl with thecouplinglland a ball valve 22 in a nipple 23 which is screwed in the coupling 1 and with which the upper end of the tube 21 connects, prevents air being drawn into the tube 21 on the up stroke of the piston 5. f
The nipple 8 is closed by a threadedplug 24 and a rod 25 Vpasses through the plug into the nipple and has a collar 26 thereon within the nipple. A coil spring 27 is arranged on the rod and bears against-the collar 26 and tends to hold the rod in a position where it will hold the valve 10 oit its seat. A knob 28 is connected with the outer end of the rod and a cross pin 29 passes through the rod. The
' outer end of the plug is provided with a groove 30 to receive the cross pin and when the pin is in said groove, the spring will hold the rod in a position where-it will force the valve 10 ofi its seat. Vsfhen the rod is turned to a position where the pin will not engage the groove, then the rod is held in `a position where the valve 10 can engage its seat. When the valve 10 again engages its seat,.the pump will yact as a double act-ion pump, but when the Valve is held oit its seat bythe rod 25, the ump will act as a. single action pump.
On t e down stroke, the air will enter through the port 6, the port 7 being closed, while the air previously drawn into the lower' part of the pump by the upwardly moving piston 5 will be forced from the cylinder through the pipe 21, pastthe valve 22 into the coupling 1l, 'from which itv will passv used as a single action pump, the air will be drawn in and exhausted through the' port 6, as the valve 10 remains od its seat at all times.v
It is thought from t-he `foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of'my invention will` be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understoodthat I may make changes in the construction .and in the com-` bination and 'arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim. Y v
What I Claim is A pump of the Class described comprising a cylinder having an inlet and exhaust port at each end thereof, anV L-shaped tubular member connected With the lower` end of the cylinder and in communication with the inlet port at the lower end of the Cylindera the upper end of the member being` closed and having a port therein adjacent its upper end, a spring pressed Valve ifor controlling said inlet port, a double piston in the cylinder, a piston rod connected therewith and passing' through the top of the Cylinder, an inwardly openingvalve controlling the inletport at Y the upper end of' the cylinder, a T-eoupling,`
ber connecting the coupling With the outlet 20 port at the lower end of the Cylinder, yan upwardly opening Valve controlling the passage between the tubular member and the T-coupling, a spring-pressed red for forcing the inlet, valve at the upper end of the cylinder off its seat and means for holding` the rod in retracted position to permit the inlet Valve to engage its seat. n n
in testimony whereof I afix my signature.
