PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC A. BAUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
METAL TRIM.
Application filed July 5, 1927. Serial No. 203,388.
My invention relates to building construction and more particularly, to a novel means for defining openings in walls.
One of the objects of my invention is to i i provide a combined jamb and plaster terminal, the jamb being in two sections, thereby adapting it to accurate fitting with the uneven and varying dimensions of the studs to which the jamb is secured. This construction is particularly adaptable to a door opening for thereason that the door stop may be secured over the gap between the two sections of the jamb.
This construction not only provides for rigid and workmanlikefinish, but may be applied with a reduction of labor cost, due to the lessening of the operations of framing the opening; by this I mean that by combining the jamb and plaster terminal, the' framing of the opening may be completed in two, instead of three steps.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a wall constructed in accordance With my invention.
In the drawings, a stud is indicated at 10 and a cripple stud at 11. Lath 12, 13 is applied to the outer and inner faces of the studs.
The trim of my invention comprises a janib made in two sections, 1 1, 15, the outer marginal edges of the sections being molded to form the grooves 16, 17 and the angular flange 18 having an inturned lip, 19. Th
form of the molding may be varied to suit the architects design.
The construction adapts itself as a plaster terminal the face of the flange 18, serving as a plaster ground, the plaster 20 being pressed into and filling the space beneath the overhanging terminal as indicated.
In order to close the gap'between the meet ing edges of the sections 14, 15, I provide a door stop, 21, secured in place by means of screws 22 which extend through the gap in the jamb sections and into the cripple stud 11. Other screws 23, 24, pass through the jamb sections into the cripple stud.
A construction such as described adapts itself to variations and inequalities in the rough framing members. The trim may be quickly and easily set and insures freedom from vibrations or weaving; the provision of the grooves 16 at the corners enables the slotting of the face of the j'amb for hinges and other hardware without interference with the profile-of the molding. The frame member may be of other material than the wood studs as shown; for example, a single metal channel may be used as the framing member, if fireproof construction is required; these and other modifications may be made without departure from the spirit of my invention.
' I claim:
7 1. In means of framing an opening in a wall, the combination of a support, a jamb divided longitudinally to form two sections, said sections being secured to said support, the margins of the sections being bent to provide plaster terminals, and a door stop mounted over and covering the gap formed by the longitudinal division of the amb.
2. In combination, a stud, a jamb longitudinally divided to form two sections, said] sections having their margins bent inwardly and then outwardly to provide a plaster terminal, the inwardly bent portions of the margins. being adapted to be snugly fitted around the stud and the sections being adapted to be secured to the studs.
3. In combination, a stud, a jamb longitudinally divided to form two sections, said sections having their margins bent inwardly and then outwardly to provide a plaster terminal, the inwardly bent portions of the margins being adapted to snugly fit around the stud and the sections being adapted to be secured to the studs, and a longitudinally extending member overlying'the gap between the two sections of the jamb. V
In testimony whereof Ihave aflixed my signature. e
