1 Claim.
The present invention relates to building construction, and particularly relates to trim to be used around doors, windows and in similar places.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which can be delivered on the building site with all Visible parts factory-finished and which is capable of quiclr and simple mounting after completion of the building work, whereby damaging of the visible surfaces of the trim is avoided.
Another object is to provide a device which enables interchange of the side parts of the trim, if it is desired to `change the door to be opened in the opposite direction to that vin which it is originally mounted.
Another object is to provide a trim which does not display any nail or screw heads, but presents an even surface free from vcracks and similar marks which frequently occur in the traditional wooden frames and which-may be kept in place by means of invisible screws, the only tool necessary for mounting the whole device being, in fact,a screw-driver.v
Further objects of the invention will be evident from the following description and the drawings relative thereto.
Our invention can be explained in greater detail by reference to the accompanying drawings which show more or less diagrammatically the construction and assembly of the various parts of our invention. In this showing,
Fig. 1 is an exploded view in perspective of a door opening showing the molding and trim members of our construction from which the manner of assembly is obvious.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a corner of our construction showing the top trim member and a side trim member assembled and with dotted lines to show the manner in which the side member is put in place,

while Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the inner side of the channel shaped molding member showing a metal strap which cooperates with a corresponding lug of the molding member to secure the molding member to the trim member.
The device according to the invention is suitably composed of four main parts, namely a rough wooden frame inserted in the door-passage or if desired beingpart of the wall when this latter consists of wood; the actual trim of U-shaped sheet metal, e. g. sheet-iron; moldings of wood or other suitable material, and a sill of oak or other suitable material.
In the various views of the drawings in which like parts are designated by like reference numerals, the frame l may suitably consist of plain wood, which need not be planed since it is completely covered by the other factory-finished parts. It should preferably be impregnated against moisture, rot and other destructive attacks and may obviously be made of cheap material. Grooves I2 are preferably factory-cut into the vertical parts of the rough frame, at the bottom for the sill, at the top for the upper part of the sheet-iron trim and on the sides for the doorhinge plates, so that the door can be hung on any side desired. In wooden walls the rough frame can be entirely omitted. as already indicated, the metal trim being simply` attached to the edge of the .wall surrounding the door-opening which in itself forms a wood frame for said opening.
.The ytrimy suitably consists of three stove-.lacquer nished, substantially U-shaped sheet-iron proles 3, li, 5 which are pushed over and screwed onto the rough frame as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5. These parts are preferably out from the same prole, one of the vertical pieces 4 being provided with the door hinges l l riveted or welded thereto, the other vertical piece 5 being provided with a hole i 0 for the bolt of the door-lock. A soundabsorbing material l5 such as felt, wood or glass libre or similar is suitably glued to the back side of the profiles. Ear-shaped fastenings or lugs 9, shown best in Fig. 6, are welded to or in some other suitable way rigidly connected to the parts 3, 4, 5. These fastenings cooperate with corresponding members, e. g. in the form of metal straps I3, fastened to the back of the moldings l (Fig. 7) for the top part 3, and to S for the side parts f2., 5 of the trim. The trim is suitably lixed to the frame i by screws through holes i4 in the ears 9, these latter thus serving to hold the trim as well vas the covering moldings for this. Instead of with straps the moldings '1, 6 may be provided with other fastening means such as buttons or spring hooks cooperating with corresponding members on the trim, so that the moldings may be put in place and removed at will, without showing any such fastening means on the front side.
The sill 2 is no integral part of the construction and may be left out. In that case the corresponding lower cut-outs l2 should of course also be left out.
The mounting of the device according to the invention is a very simple and quick procedure:
The sill 2, if any, is rst inserted in its grooves l2 in the rough frame l and xed with a screw at each end, these screws subsequently being hidden by the trim. The upper part 2 of thetrim is next inserted in its grooves and pushed somewhat upwards, so that suicient space is left for the side pieces 4 and 5 to be put in place without scratching as shown in Fig. 2. The member 4 lcarrying the hinges is then put into place and fixed to the frame i with screws through ears 9. The door is hung. Member 5 is now set, the door is closed and member 5 adjusted against it and then fastened to the frame l by screws through the corresponding ears 9. The upper part 3 of the trim is now pushed down tightly against the side pieces so that it ts the door` and is then attached to the top part of the frame I by screws through ears 8. Finally the moldings are hooked onto their fastenings which are shaped so that the moldings become tightly pressed against the wall and the side of the trim. The joint between wall'and rough frame as well as the edge of the trim are thus covered by the moldings as shown best in Fig. 3.
Instead of sheet iron and wood moldable plastics or other materials suitable for stamping or pressing may also obviously be used.
The invention is not limited to door trims but may in principle be used for other building details such as windows, closets andthe like.
We claim:
An adjustable door trim for a door frame hav- Y ing stile members and a head, comprising a channel-shaped top trim member, a pair of channelshaped side trim members adapted when mounted to abut against the underside of said top member at right angles thereto, projecting lugs mounted integrally along the edges of said channel-shaped top and side members, said lugs being provided with extensions providing molding fastening means and with means for adjustably securing said channel-shaped members to the door frame, said channel-shaped top member having a length which is greater than the inside width of said door frame, said stile members having slots just beneath the head ofy sufficient width and depth to permit insertion of the channelshaped top member and to permit adjustment of same both vertically and horizontally, a channel-shaped top molding, a pair of channel-shaped side moldings adapted when mounted to abut against the underside of said top molding at right angles thereto, fastening elements mounted on the inner sides of said top molding and said side moldings and cooperating with the extensions on said channel-shaped trim members to removably secure said moldings over the edges of said channel-shaped trim members to cover and conceal said edges and said securing elements, and door hinges mounted on one of said channel-shaped side members.
