This invention relates to n. hook cover` adopted lto be applied to n bool: in orderto protect the some, and one object of the V.1nvention is to provide n book cover which 5 may he easily up lied and is so constructed that it muy he et justed to Aaccommodate 1tself to the thickness of the hook.
Another object of the invention is to--so form the cover that the portion which covers l0 the binding of the book will ver)1 eieet-ively shieid the outer face thereof and also protect its upper ond lower edges end ot tho seme time to so cover that openings will he provided through 15 which the title and the uut-hor of theiiooltV will be exposed or et least eportion of the binding disclosed to vienr so that ebook may he readily identified either by its title or the color of the binding. 2o
vde the portions the hacks of the hook with pockets in which clippings or papers cont-dining notes relating to the book may be placed where they` will be readily accessible when wanted,
Another object of the invention is torovide :mover which will be chen to pro uce, strong and durable and muy e easily npplied to o. hook of e stende-rd size und ad- ]usted to accommodate itself to the thickness of the book.
panving drawing, wherein The invention is illustrated inthe accom-f the cover applied to s, ook;
Fig. 2 is n. transverse sectionalV view through the book and cover taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; l
Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary sectional view taken on the line '3 3 of Fig. 1 with the pages of the bool: omitted. for the sake of clem-ness. and i Fig. 4 is n. vieu" shonvino the cover rcmovrd from the book end placed'ilet.
The cover constituting the Suliject-lnntter of this invention has been shown applied to u book 1 which isof o standard size and provided with the usual backs 2 applied to the pages of, the hook in the usuel manner ond o connected by the usuel binding 3. The cover -consists of com union sections 4, each of which is prefere lg formed of stiliY pager, elthough env suite le materiel may e eniployed, en blanks from which the cover sections nre formed are provided with ivin s 5 which ere folded inwardly, es shown in ig.
forni this portion of they portions of 'beyond the Another ohject'of the invention is to pro of the cover which fit upon I s l Figure 1 1s o perslectwe view showing vmoistened inner surfaces en not be liable to be easily torn. and lower portions S and 10 of the tongues 4, endend portions 6 folded inwardly and secured upon we seen that cach cover section is of on envelo ve-like formation and may be very easily slid into pluce upon the hacks of the hook.
The wings 5 terminate in slight-1y spaced relation to the inner ends of the cover seetions and it is contemplated that the depth of the envelope from the outer end ofa .cover section to the inner ends of the'side wings 5 will correspond to the width oi the hoek of n hook to which the cover is to be applied. Therefore, when the covers a-re-nppiied to the backs ofa book, the inner or roerend 4 book und may oe folded to' over Isp the side portions of the binding, i as shown nt 7 in Figs. l and 2. Tongues 8 and 9 extend from the inner end of one cover section and companion tongues 10 und 11 pro- 'ect from the other cover section and ere adapted to be overlapped by the tongues 8 and 9. It should be noted that the tongues 10 ond 11 are of greater width than the tongues 8 ond 9 thereby providing side portions 12 and 13 adapted to be folded into ein bracing engagement with the tongues 8 Vsind 9, tis-shown in Figs. Send .4. Thetongues are of suitable length to accommodate a very thick hook of e standard size to receive the cover` sections upon its back, butitwill he evident that, if the'cover is to be applied to a. thinboolr, the, tongues may be cut so that they will. be of the ivgoper long-th to? extend across the binding. e inner surfaces of the tongues 10 `end 11 ere gumined, be'readiiy seen that when they ere moistened and the. tongues 8 und 9 aplied `to their the side portionsl and 13 folded into emhrneing'relntion-'to thev tongues 8 und 9, the tongues of the cover sections will extendA the Wings 5. It will, therefore, l
Bti
and; it will the two coverl sections will he firmly oonnectl ed und alsotheir up er und lower-edge porP tions will bestrengt ened so that-they will The upper 8 and l() project, as shownin Fig. 4, and provide extensions 14 which may be folded over the upper and lower edges of the binding ns shown 1n Figs. 1 und 3, and protect these e portions so that they will not be worn. t will thus be seen that when the cover sections are connected by their coereting tongues they will be securely join by spaced portions 15 and 16 which ere of e. length correspending to the width of the binding end spaced from euch other to define openings through which the title of the book und. the nume of the author Ywill be disclosed or et least nortion of the binding exposed to view so dint when n number of books are provided with covers a book which it is ydesired to rend or referred to muy be easily identified. By this arrangement it is not necessary to write the title of the-book upon the cover und, therefore, u cover may be transferred from one book to another of approximately the saine size und thickness Without confusion occurring due to the cover being marked.
Mnny persons who rend books or use the-1n :is references desire to make notes relating to the subject-matter of the book or cut clippings referi-'ing to the book from newspapers und the like, und in order thst these notes and clippinrs mcy be readily accessible, I have provic ed euch covcr section with u pocket 17. Each of these pockets is of nu envelope formation and is formed with pleated walls 18 so that the pockets muy be extended if the notes and cli pings to be placed therein are numerous or nlky. The envelopes ero slightly smaller in dimensions than the cover sections to which they are applied, us shown in Fig. l, so that they will not project beyond the mui-vins of the book and each is provided with a closure Hep 19 which serves to tempo rarily close the open end of the pocket sind muy accommodate itself to the thickness of the pocket. A. fastener 2O muy be provided -for each closure if so desired or they may be left free.
When s cover is to ben plied to n book` the cover sections are nppliec to the backs of the book und if the tongues nre too 'long they nre cut to the proper length. The cover sections .are then removedfrom the hook and placed iin-t upon a table or other suitable su pport so that the tongues 10 and 1]. may be inoistened :1nd the tonoues 8 und 9 secured in overl ying relation to t lem. After the tongues 8 and 9 have been secured upon the tongues 10 and 11, the side extensions 12 und 13 are folded inwardly and secured in embracing relation to the tongues S und 9. The tongues of the two cover sections will now be iii-nil).r secured together and will be reinforced so that they will not be liuble to easily teur. The bucks o1' the book can now be turned reurwurdlgy' so that they extend substantially llcn'izouiul to euch other sind the cover sections slid into place upon them. After the rover sections nre in place, the bucks nrc returnml to their normal positions and the portions oi. the tongues l 8 und l0 which roject from the upper und lower edges of the binding folded into place, as shown in Figs. l :incl 3. If it is desired to transfer the cover to another book, it is merely necessary to again swing the backs of the book so that they extend reorwurdly from the binding nnd slip the cover sections vfrom the backs. The cover can then be essi-ly applied to another book of a iproxinmtely the salue size sind thickness. have, therefore, provided a. cover which muy uccellimednte itself to the thickness of a book having backs of n. standard size und further pro` vided si` cover having pockets in which notes and clippings having reference to the book may be kept ferrea-dy reference.
Hoving thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A book cover comprising cover sections adapted to cover the bac-ks of a book and heving tongues projecting from their inner sido edges to extend across the bindin of the hook, the tongues of one' cover section overlying thetonoues of the other-cover section and secured iereto andniarnnel. portions projecting from the upper nndblower tongues vadapted to be bent over the ends of the binding of the book to protect the sanne.
2. A book cover comprising cover sections adapted to fit upon the bucks of n book and bovino' tongues projecting from their inner side edo'es to extend across the binding of the book, the tongues of one cover section overlying the tongues of the other und secured thereto port-ions folded to cured thereto.
3. A book cover comprisinv' sections euch and having marginal embrace the sume and se of en envelope formation undzndnpted to be fitted `upon the backs of a book, the outer walls of the cover sections being extended and adapted to be folded into covering relation to side portions of the bindingioff a, book and provided with tongue extensions to extend across the binding, the tongues of one cover section being adopted to be secured in overlapped relation to the ton ues of the other cover section and having sidiJ extensions folded and secured in embracing relation thereto, certain of the tongues being extended und adopted to bc folded over tho ends of the hinxling to protect theedges there-nt.
In testimony whereof lsliix my sigimt-urc.
