appncaruoa'nl'a :anuary 1s, ieasf seran nbfeusosj This invention-relates te an under-garment intended for infants lor'young children, and has for its 'object to provide a type of supporting garment which will be provided with attaching means '.for diapers or' other lower garments worn by the infant. I-Ieretofore, in garments of this same general character, the ehilds diapers haveusually been secured directly to 'the body of the upper` garment, which is 'usually a shirt, band or the like. The means of attachingthe diapers to such upper garment'A has generally consisted of safetyl pins, and when such fastening means are used, holes are'formedin the 'garment which, due to the pull of the da er,isoon enlarge and lcausei .the 4garment to ecoxne torn and soo'n unfit lfor use. This is particularly so where the garment toyvhich the diaper has been attached is of knitted fabrie,`in which the breaking of one thread by the piercing of a safety pin,I rapidly causes large holes` to form.
The primary object, therefore, of this invention is to provide, in several forms of upper garments, a means ofattachment for a diaper or other lower garment, which means 'of attachment will be so arranged-anddisposed, that the same not` only enables the' diaper to be satisfactorily ,held in-place upon the infant, but Vwhich also avoids puneturing, or in 'anyother way mutilating the-actual body of the garment to which the diaper is adapted to be secured. A further object offthis invention is to provide such means of securing a-diaper in position, which means may, if' desired after considerable use, be severed or otherwise detached fromthebody ofthe arment on which they are formed, leaving the'body of such arment intact and greatly extending. the li e of such garment.- .With these objects, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear,` in view, I haveA devised the particular arrangement of parts set forth belowfand pointed out in the claim ap ended hereto. l,
eference is to be had to theacompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in 'which- Fig. 1 is a. front elevation of a childs un dershirt made in accordance with my invention y Fi .\2 is a similar view showing the manner in-wliich a-diaper may be attached;

In the embodiment of 'my inventi closed in Figs. 1 to i inclusive, I haves l an infants upper 'garment in the fdrinpf-an undershirt 1. The Same may be of 1anygi'I1 t1 '.;-180 ted, or Woveny textile 'fabric and-is,pijvi,d .edA Withthe conventional sh'oulderstrap's, the, lower end` of the garment'isprovi'ded a pair 'of laterally extending iiaps orfta'bs. 3 and 4. These tabs 3 Vand 4: extend p'ut'frm 185 the side edgesA orseams of Ythe vgarmenti, giesignated at 5 and 6. 4Each ap, may. ,follftlle purpose of providing a substantialconstruction, be composed of several thiekne'sj'ses' or plies of material, such thicknesses .'Qfmiiate-elm .rial being shown at 7 and 8 and comprising tudinal seam 9. Through this constrfliction the tabs, 4While made integral xvithlthelbodyf ofthe garment, .are maintained substantially. separate therefrom, in that when the Same are punctured by the safety pins 10, 4which` 100 f l,attach the diaper 11 to such tabs, any perforations 0,1 openings that4 Inay)v be formedin sequent diaper pull, .will not be extended into the .bo'dybf the garment. vThe separatingseamsf' alsof-1015 maintainthebod of the garment in itsconr leted form so t'lat should thetabs' 3 anda 'ecome mutilated bythe constant insertioxiof attaching pins 10 and diaper pull thereon,

are shown 'in more or less elongated, shape with' their lower ends extending coextensivc with the loi'ver edge of the garment. It will,
be understood that these tabs maybe made in various shapes according to they type of garment on which they are provided and they may, if desired, be made of diierent or stronger material from that constituting the body of Vthe garment. The tabs may also, if "desired, be provided with detachable fastening means for securing them to the 'garment Y. so-*that they may be removedif desired and new tabs attached when those in useA become worn o r torn by constant use. 'The mannerl "in which these tabs are used is clearly .dis-
closed in Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive. It will be seen that the same'proje'ct out laterally from the longitudinal sides ofthe garment and are of .suflicient length toenable .the diaper to be drawn up as high 'as desired, and secured at any point on' these tabs asis required diaper fitthe child'inore snugly than can be. done by securing the diaper as shown in Fig.
to properly hold the diaper in place. The folded diaper may be merely secured in place -as shovvn 1n Fig. 2 by having the attaching' pins passthrough-the two folds lland 12 of the diaper and through the ltabs. In s ome instances, where it is required to have the 2, the diaper may be folded in as shown in Fig. 4, and the fabs folded longitudinally as at 13, the securing pin then passing. through,
' the various folds .of the diaper as well as through the doubled-over parts of the tab..
In Fig. 5 is shown an infants bandlwhich may be made of either knitted .or woven fabric and which has the front` vvider abdomen# 'supporting part 14, and'back'portion 15.
An adjusting means for enabling the garment to be Adrawn snugly about the'cliildsy body consists of `aslit 16 provided in aprojecting part or tab 2O located at the front 'of the garment, and the end 17 of. the front flap '14 is passed through tlieslit, thence fold# ed back upon'itself, and the VtWo-partsbt and* .17 are pinned together by a .safety pin 19.
. At 21 and 22 are'shovvn4 the laterally extenduse. .It will be seen that the'tab 22 made f up of several tliielinesses'iof 'materiah'such ing attaching tabs which are generally similar in principle to the tabs 3 and 4 disclosed in `igs.' -1 to 4 inclusive. These tabs form therefrom byfnieans of, longitudinal, lines of stitches 23 and 24. 'lhuS' :iter'.boi'isideriilile v use when the tabs 21 and 22 become torn from -constant piercing-x by the attaching pins for the diaper and subsequent diaperl pull, the tabs may be cut o on the o utsideof the lines of stitching 23 and 24, 'leavingth ybody of the garment intact andcapablebtfurther thiclmesses of material in this iiistaiiceQ'coiiiprising extended pai-ts on the front portion .the edges of the various the front 14, back 15 and t ie tabs 21 and 22,
2 l diseases v f 14 -aiidthe back 15.v The tab 21 is similarly constructed, that is, it is composed of extendedparts of the flap 20 and the back 15. For
the purpose 'of strengthening the garment, arts comprising are bound by a suitable binding strip 25.
In Fig. 7 is shown agarment generally siniilar to the garment disclosed 1n Fig. 5 and the saine numerals of reference are applied to the similagi parts.- The garment shown in Fig. 7 is, however, provided with supporting shoulder straps 26 and 27, which are adjustable by being looped .through slits 28 near the top edge of the front band 14. The tabs ,21 and 22 disclosed in the garment'of Fig. 7
are similar to those shown in Fig. 5 and are similarly separated from the body of the garment by means of` the lines of dividing stitches 23 and 24. The garment shown in Fig 7 is made of several thicknesses" of material or is lined with soft flannel, so that the tabs, disclosed in cross section'in Fig. 8, are
composed of a` plurality of thicknesses of folded fabric and the same are, as aresult, quite substantial andV lasting.
From the foregoing, the manner in which my improved garments are worn and used will be readily understood. Thel garment disclosed in Figs. 1 to 1 inclusive,'is in the form'of a shirt and the manner in-which the diaper is secured thereto has previously been described. The diaper 'may also if desired be'folded in many ways according to the practice adopted by different mothers. In each instance, hoyvever, the tab' will he found to project in such a way that the securing pins may be passed through it to hold theV diaper in place.v If the shirtis too long for very young or new-born infants, the'shirt may be turned up' atv the bottom without in any way interferingfwitlthe use ofthe securing tabs.
vtabs canbe easilycut aivay when they become excessively torn from theconstant. insertion of the securing pins and diaper pull, leavingr .:i. garment which' may be worn for some time thereafter4 Without presenting a disi-cpiihihlnA :ip ieii'rancc.
Iavmg described several embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that the saine. is
not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming wi' thin the scope of the annexedclaim..
