'VARIABLE-HEAD CENTRIFUGAL Application mea Aprn as, 192s. senai No. 271,999.
My invention -is 'particularly applicable to centrifugal pumps, although it may also-f be used for turbine water wheels wherein the pressure or .head in which the impeller operates vary over-a Wide range. -Y I i It is also applicable where different speeds of impeller operation are-to be employed over considerable periods f time and with the same operatinghead. y My invention has for its object the provision of means for varying the effective diameter, angle and velocity characteristics, to accommodate changes in head from time to time or in exceptional cases changes in speed, or
i l`of speed and head.
Itis particularly .adaptabl'efto submerged pumps of large capacity and is a modification of the invention set forth'in my copending application, Ser. No. 227 ,310v liled October 19, 1927.. Y
By referring to the will be made clear.
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section through a submerged double centrifugal pump employing my invention, with the parts assembled on the lefthand sideof the figure for operating under a relatively llow head, and with the parts removedv on the right hand side of the figure as whenit is to be operated under a relatively higher head. The Pfigure is-taken on the section line 1,1,of Figs. 2v and 3 respectively; e
Fig. 2 is 'a crosssection through the left hand portionof therunnero 1 with the 355 parts assembled for -operating under the I lower head. Y 'f l Fim 3 isa cross section through the same yrun er with the portions adapted to operate under the lower head removed,l so, that the.
40 runner is shown suitable oroperating under the higher head. s i
Fig. 4 is a section oni-the line IVf-IV of Fig. 2 showing the manner of fastening the impeller extensions or low head parts.
Thron hout the figures similai numerals refer to 1dentical `parts. v The main operating shaft adapted to be driven byany conventional means is indicated bythe numeral 1. v
A volute casing into which the water is discharged by the impellers is shown at 2.
` Suction inlets are'shown at 3,13 and at 4, 4. e An impeller as indicated at 5, fitted to the drawing my invention are held in place shaft 1 and impeller vanes fixed with the impeller casting 5 `.are shown at 6, 6.
The impeller is formed with the center disc 7, and-with sides at 8, 9 respectively,l effecting closure through a runningjoint 1n a conventional manner with the casing 2.
Referring particularly to the left hand of Fig. 1 and toFig. 2 removablepiepes 10, 10
`are provided which are in elect extensions 4to the vanes 6, 6 when they are bolted between the'disc 7 and sides 8 and 9 and these bythe through bolts 11 (see also Fig. 4). When these vane extensions 10 are in the position at the left of Fig. 1 the impeller is adapted tov-operate at a lower head.
It willbe noted that under the lower head Iits peripheral velocity may be maintained the same ,as the peripheral velocit' of the vanes 6 on the right hand side of t e ligure lvlvhertlie latter is operating under the higher In other words the discharge lronrV the vane extensions 10 under the lower head will be i maintained the same as the discharge veloc- L ity from the vane 6 under the higher head.
The pump is particularly adapted to large sizes and the manhole 12 in the casing 2 is provided to give access within the casing so that the extensionmembers `10, l0 may be readily removed during seasonal'variations in the headrtobe pumped.
.Thus, where the pump 1s employed on a river having a considerable rise and fall, when the river is low the head to be pumped to an adjacent irrigation ditch would be higher than during seasons of high water. e At such low water season therefore the extensions 10 are employed'bolted yin place as shown to the left of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2;
' whereas during the seasons lof high water,- when not such a great head is vto be raised, the extensions are removed as shown to the left of' Fig. 1 and in Fig. 3.
I claim: l 1. Inj a centrifugal pump, a volute casing, an impeller mounted to rotate in said casin vand having xed vanes anda pair of disc si es extending toa greater diameter than said vanes, apluralityof removable members adapted to be detachably fixed betweerisaid disc sides andforming extensions .to sald vanes'. Y 1 v 2. In a lcentrifugal pump, a volute casing,
,said sides,
animpeller mounted to rotate in said casing and having fixed vanes and a pair'of disc sides extending to a greater diameter than said vanes, a pluralityfof removable members adapted to be detachably fixed between said disc sides and formin extensions to said vanes to substantially t 1e periphery of said sides.
3. In a centrifugal pump, a volute casing, av double impeller having a central ldiaphragm and a disc side spaced from and on each side of said diaphragm, a plurality of vanes symmetrically positioned between each side and said diaphragm and within a diameter substantially less than the diameter of a plurality of members adapted to be detachably fixed between each of said sides 5. In a centrifugal pump, a rotor comprising a'sliaft on which is mounted an impeller, said impeller having fixed vanes and a. pair of disc sides extending to 'a greater diameter than said vanes, a plurality of removable members adapted to be detachably fixed between said disc sides and formingextensions to` said vanes.
